Tuesday

State College (6) vs Williamsport (5): BOX SCORE - One swing from Jackson Rains and clutch pitching from Parker Morris allowed the Spikes to open the home series with a win. The Crosscutters seemed to have stayed one step ahead of State College with an answer to each run. Luke Nomura’s RBI single in the second gave the Spikes a 1-0 lead but the Crosscutters’ response was a two-run home run from Carson Bayne (364 feet, 96.8-mph exit velocity) in the top of the third. By the bottom of the seventh, State College loaded the bases for a groundout to make it a one-run game, trailing 4-3. With two outs and a full count, Rains would catch a middle-low heater 406 feet to left center field (104 mph exit velocity) for the go-ahead and game-winning blow. In the top of the eighth with one out, the Crosscutters would load the bases and make it a one-run game which led to an earlier entry for Morris who induced a ground ball for a double play and retired the side in order in the ninth for the final.

Trenton (9) vs West Virginia (1): BOX SCORE - Nine runs on 13 hits was more than enough support for the Thunder pitching staff who surrendered only three hits. Billy Morris worked six innings in the start, striking out six and being the one on the hook for the three hits. The last hit he would allow would come in the top of the third as West Virginia would be held hitless through the final 6.2 innings and the last three would see one baserunner. Offensively, Trenton was led by a two-hit, two-RBI night from Michael Whooley and a two-hit, two-run performance from JuJu Stevens with Cy Turner, AJ Swader and Julian Swift also tallying two hits.

Aberdeen (9) @ Mahoning Valley (6): BOX SCORE - The IronBirds’ third straight win advanced them to a three-way tie for first place on the backs of Jevin Relaford and Nathan Earley’s seven combined RBI. The Scrappers got off to a first inning lead after an RBI-triple from Zion Williams who then scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly that was answered in the third on a Brycen Hammonds single and three-run home run from Relaford. His second of the summer, the shortstop and leadoff bat went 371 feet to left, 95.1 mph off the bat. Mahoning Valley’s response to take the lead in the bottom half came from back-to-back hits from Kaikea Harrison (single) and Jordan Taylor (ground-rule double) for a 5-4 lead. The next inning, Aberdeen would strike for the last time and seal the victory offensively from a Patrick McCullough single, Relaford’s fourth RBI of the night on a single and a bases-clearing, three-run triple by Earley that nearly left the park, 400 feet off the wall.

Wednesday

Trenton (7) vs West Virginia (5): BOX SCORE - Scoring all seven runs in the first three innings, the Thunder put themselves in position to sweep and move to .500 to close out the series. Zack Thompson, who was one of two Black Bears to have more than one hit, doubled in the first for West Virginia’s only lead of the game in the first inning. However, it was answered by a Julian Swift single, Dean O’Neill walk and Drew Wyers double for a Trenton 4-1 lead. West Virginia’s Jackson Trout would then start his three-hit performance with his first home run of the summer, 397 feet to left with an exit velocity of 105.3 mph. The round-tripper was Trout’s first of three hits that registered exit velocities over 100 mph as well (100-mph 1B T4, 100.7-mph 2B T6). The Black Bears would fight to make a comeback with a run in the seventh, but John Higgins would shut it down out of the bullpen for the Thunder with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts.

Williamsport (12) @ State College (3): BOX SCORE - The Crosscutters kept their share of first place in the second half standings on David Case’s Pitcher of the Week title defense and a 12-run offensive explosion. Case went five innings deep with five strikeouts, allowing no runs and collecting 10 whiffs. On offense, Matthew Williams led the way with five RBI on three hits, two of them doubles with four runs scored by James McCoy. McCoy would also go the other way for his second home run in the third inning, 396 feet to left center, 102.2 mph off the bat. Williams, McCoy, Chris Stanfield, Ehi Okojie and Jake Zitella each would collect three hits on the night as well. For the Spikes, Luke Nomura would be responsible for two of the three runs, scoring on a Nyan Hayes double and single in the eighth and ninth innings.

Aberdeen (9) vs Mahoning Valley (4): BOX SCORE - The IronBirds also kept their share of first place and put themselves in position to sweep by putting up nine runs for the second straight night. Jaden Wywoda held the Scrappers to one run and two hits through five innings as the right-hander struck out five. Behind him, Isaiah Parido tallied two hits, including a double, drove in and scored a run as well as walked and stole base twice. Brycen Hammonds and Max Galvin led Aberdeen with two RBI with Nathan Earley and Brylan West putting together three hits. Hammonds and Earley would also score twice. Maddix Mahalakis led the Scrappers offense with two hits, two RBI and two runs. His first hit came in the bottom of the first as a solo home run for his second of the summer (400 feet, 104-mph exit velocity) and the second an RBI triple in the eighth.

Thursday

West Virginia (6) @ Trenton (1): BOX SCORE - Shortened to a five inning contest due to air quality, the Black Bears avoided the sweep and closed the series at .500. Alec DeMartino drove in the game’s first run for West Virginia with a single to right field in the first inning. The visitors would continue to plate runs with five in the second on a two-run double from Sam Miller, sacrifice fly from Cole Kitchens, a triple from Zack Thompson and the final run coming off the bat of Ben Barrett. On the mound, Drew Townson threw all five innings for West Virginia, surrendering Trenton’s lone run in the fourth off a double from AJ Swader, struck out three, and gave up three hits.

Friday

Williamsport (9) vs Trenton (2): BOX SCORE - The Crosscutters kicked off the home series with three multi-RBI performances and only one call to the bullpen. The Thunder would have their one and only lead of the night in the top of the second off of Julian Swift’s first home run of the summer (362 feet, 95.9-mph exit velocity) but the bottom half would feature the answer. In back-to-back at bats, Jack Kail would single in the tying run and Joey DeMucci’s ground out would give Williamsport the lead that would be extended and held onto for the remainder of the night. Kail would end the game, leading with three RBIs on two hits and scoring once himself with Owen Prince and Sam DeCarlo also having two-hit, two-RBI nights each scoring a run as well. The Crosscutters’ pitching would feature six innings from Ryker Walton and a three-inning save from Joel Tornero who would strike out five batters. Trenton’s second run of the game would come off the bat of AJ Swader. doubling in Drew Wyers who singled as a pinch-hitter.

Aberdeen (9) vs West Virginia (8): BOX SCORE - The IronBirds walked it off with a five-run ninth inning to extend their winning streak to nine games and stay tied with the Crosscutters at the top of the standings. The Black Bears got off to an early lead with four runs in the first two innings, highlighted by a solo home run from Ian Collier (368 feet, 97.5-mph exit velocity) and RBI double from Cayden Gaskin in the second inning. West Virginia would then extend that lead eight to four entering the ninth inning but three consecutive singles from Jevin Relaford, Brycen Hammonds and Nathan Earley to lead off the inning would score two runs, a double from Brylan West would score the third of the three previous singles with the following at bat from Brian Heckelman tying the game at eight on a double of his own. An intentional walk, wild pitch and another walk would then load the bases for Heckelman to score the walk-off run on a wild pitch.

Saturday

Aberdeen (8) vs West Virginia (4): BOX SCORE - The IronBirds took their sixth straight and advanced into first place to highlight Kai Leckszas’ first MLB Draft League start. The right-hander out of Georgetown went four innings deep and struck out eight batters, surrendering one run. The one run would come from an Alec DeMartino double in the third, but Aberdeen would still hold a lead following a sac fly from Jevin Relaford and single from Max Galvin the innings prior. The IronBirds would remain to hold their lead with Relaford and Brayden Simpson leading the team with two RBI while the Black Bears looked to claw back with a DeMartino home run (337 feet, 89.3-mph exit velocity) in the seventh. However, Ryder Edwards would go perfect in the eighth and ninth for Aberdeen with four strikeouts to close the night out.

State College (6) @ Mahoning Valley Team (4): BOX SCORE - After a two-day unplanned break, the Spikes and Scrappers returned to the field with State College opening the now two-game set on top. Justin Journette led the Spikes with a 3-for-4 night with three RBI, two runs and two triples. The Norfolk State graduates would become the eighth player in MLB Draft League history since 2022 to have two three-baggers in one game. Behind him, Trent Turner would tally three hits, doubling twice and two-hit nights from Jackson Rains, Camden Ross and Luke Nomura. Haden Luke would be State College’s top performer on the mound with three scoreless innings and five strikeouts. The first of his three innings would feature the right-hander striking out the side in order, all looking. Jordan Taylor led State College with a two-run home run in the second inning for his first of the summer, traveling 387 feet with a 105.4-mph exit velocity.

Sunday

West Virginia (4) @ Aberdeen (3): BOX SCORE - The Black Bears avoided the sweep from the offensive production of Zack Thompson and steady pitching from Ben Barrett. Thompson would record two hits, one of them being an opposite field, two-run home run that would make the difference in the seventh inning. His second of the summer, the right-handed swinging catcher would take an 86-mph cutter 381 feet with an exit velocity of 96.5 mph. After hitting in the past five games, Barrett took to the mound for his fourth start of the summer. The two-way right-hander struck out four over five innings of one-run ball. Jevin Relaford would lead the IronBirds with his seventh two-hit performance in the last 10 games while also driving in two runs. The third for Aberdeen would come from Jacoby Radcliffe’s first home run in his second game, 365 feet to right with an exit velocity of 93.3 mph.

Mahoning Valley (7) vs State College (4): BOX SCORE - The Scrappers snapped a seven game skid and ended the week with a home victory as Jordan Taylor homered for the second straight game. Coming in the fourth inning, it would tie the game at three (376 feet, 101.4-mph exit velocity) with Maddox Mihalakis giving Mahoning Valley the lead that would be extended and held onto for the remainder of the game. Trent Turner would piece together his second three-hit game in as many days with an RBI double in the third inning. Justin Abercrombie would be the Scrappers’ leader out of the bullpen with two scoreless innings, striking out four.

Trenton (13) @ Williamsport (7): BOX SCORE - Seven runs in the ninth was the highlight for the Thunder to rally and split the two-game set. Williamsport would have a 7-2 lead highlighted by home runs in the second inning by James McCoy (421 feet, 108.2-mph exit velocity) and Matthew Williams (388 feet, 104.8-mph exit velocity). However, Trenton would start its comeback in the eighth with a two-out grand slam by Drew Wyers (375 feet, 100.1-mph exit velocity) to bring the Thunder within one run. In the ninth, Trenton would load the bases to lead off the inning for Julian Swift’s go-ahead score with a two-run double, followed by a two-run single by AJ Swader, capped off by a Jake Koonin home run (389 feet, 102.4-mph exit velocity), his fourth of the summer and first of the second half.
