Monday

State College (10) vs Mahoning Valley (9): BOX SCORE - Jackson Rains played the hero for the second time this summer, four days after his previous walk-off in the sudden death extra inning. The Scrappers jumped to a 7-0 lead through the first five innings after Maddox Mihalakis homered for the fifth time this summer (440 feet, 105.4-mph exit velocity) to bring in two runs in the third. A Cayden Evans single in the fifth would then lead to him scoring on Zion Williams’ three-run homer (431 feet, 105-mph exit velocity). It would be Williams’ third home run of the summer, all coming in the last five games. In the sixth, the Spikes would start their rally with five runs from a Stan DeMartinis III three-run home run (370 feet, 98.8-mph exit velocity), and an RBI-triple from Elie Kligman. In the seventh, errors and walks would lead to a tie game with the eighth inning featuring a triple by Ryan Rivera and a pinch-hit, two-run home run from Hudson Shupe (366 feet, 94.4-mph exit velocity) to give State College the lead. In the ninth, an error and single by Cooper Vance would tie the game back up at nine. In the bottom half, an error, sacrifice bunt, wild pitch and walk would put runners on the corners with one out for Rains to deliver the walk-off swing via a sacrifice fly into right field for State College’s sixth win in a row.

West Virginia (14) @ Williamsport (9): BOX SCORE - The Black Bears offense came early and often in Williamsport on Monday, scoring runs in all but two innings including multiple runs in the first three innings. Aiding in the early 8-0 lead for West Virginia was Ian Collier’s two-run home run in the second, as well as a pair of RBI singles from Ben Barrett. Helping extend the lead to 13-0, Cole Kitchens and Jackson Trout each blasted a two-run shot in back-to-back innings. The zero on the board was provided by Hunter Holzemer’s best start of the summer, working six scoreless innings while striking out six and earning the win. The Cutters didn’t go away quiet, putting up two in the eighth and seven in the ninth to cut the deficit to five. Chris Stanfield drove in a pair in the eighth and another in ninth and James McCoy provided the most impactful hit with a bases clearing double in the final frame. Kevin Jones, Elijah Cook and Barrett each had three hits for the Black Bears and Nick Barone led the Cutters with three of his own, including a triple and double.

Trenton (9) @ Aberdeen (2): BOX SCORE - A six-run third inning was all Trenton needed Monday night as Billy Morris held Aberdeen to just one run over his four innings before the bullpen slammed the door over the final five innings. The six-run inning was started by Louis Percival’s RBI single before AJ Swader drove in a pair with a triple and Juju Stevens added another with an RBI single. Aberdeen’s offense was provided by Pierre Cabral’s RBI double in the fourth and Dylan Winebrenner’s RBI single in the fifth. Trenton’s bullpen was the story of the game, starting with Hayden Lewis who secured the win, allowing just one run and one hit over three innings while striking out five. Justin Gay and Owen Stewart each pitched a clean inning over the eighth and ninth, striking out two apiece. Carrying the IronBirds pitching staff Monday, Billy Barlow pitched a pair of clean innings while striking out four. Swader’s three hits led the game and he also added two RBI and scored a run. Tuesday night’s rubber match is a big one as the two teams are separated 1.5 games in the standings and both within striking distance of the first place State College Spikes.

Tuesday

Williamsport (5) vs West Virginia (3): BOX SCORE - It was a pitchers duel through the first half of the game as both starting pitchers went beyond the fifth inning, surrendering three runs apiece. West Virginia’s Tyler Kaltreider got the better of the two, allowing two earned runs over 6.2 innings while striking out seven. For Williamsport, left-hander David Case allowed three runs over 5.1 innings and also punched out seven. James McCoy helped put the Cutters up 3-0 in the third with his fifth home run of the second half, tying the league-lead. Ian Collier put the Black Bears on the board in the sixth with a two-run double before an RBI groundout evened the score. Williamsport broke through in the eighth with a Sam DeCarlo sacrifice fly to take the lead and Jake Zitella added an insurance run with an RBI single. Williamsport’s Joel Tornero earned his first MLB Draft League win, pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth inning with three strikeouts.

Wednesday

West Virginia (6) vs Aberdeen (5): BOX SCORE - The hits kept coming in the series opener from Morgantown as the two teams combined for 26 hits and three home runs. Max Galvin got the offense started for Aberdeen in the second, blasting his third home run for a 1-0 lead. That would be the only run Cam Padgett, West Virginia’s starter, would allow, working five innings and striking out six in the win. Sam Miller’s second inning RBI single tied the game before Ian Collier blew it open in the third with a three-run shot. Already leading 4-2 in sixth, Cole Kitchens provided two important insurance runs with a two-run blast. RBI singles from Brayden Simpson and Isaiah Parido in the seventh, followed by Jacoby Radcliffe’s RBI in the eighth would cut the deficit to one but ultimately weren’t able to push across the tying run. Andrew Luczak earned his first MLB Draft League save with 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Jacob Faulkner led the IronBirds pitching staff with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen while Parido racked up four hits on the night.

Trenton (6) vs State College (2): BOX SCORE - A strong night from the pitching staff and an offense that flexed their muscle with three home runs led the Thunder to the win in the series opener. Already leading 1-0 in the second, Jake Koonin blasted a two-run shot to extend the lead. The Spikes clawed back with two in the fifth, led by CJ Richmond’s RBI single at 111 mph which was the third hardest hit ball of the second half. Koonin immediately answered in the top half with his second home run of the game and sixth on the summer, putting him atop the summer long home run leaderboard (three in each half). Ty Stecko’s solo blast in the seventh would extend the lead to three and the Thunder never looked back from there. Jackson Thomas got the start for Trenton, allowed one earned run over 4.1 innings before the bullpen held the Spikes scoreless over the final 4.2 innings. Justin Gay was the winning pitcher with 2.2 dominant innings, allowed just one hit while striking out four. John Higgins and Owen Stewart helped close out the game with a scoreless inning apiece. Richmond led the Spikes with two hits while Justin Journette’s double was their lone extra-base hit on the night.

Williamsport (8) vs Mahoning Valley (3): BOX SCORE - The final score wasn’t indicative of the majority of the game as the Cutters put up four runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach for the Scrappers. Another strong start from Ryker Walton put Williamsport on track as he surrendered just one run over five innings and struck out a season-high seven. Alex Kanipe got the start for the Scrappers and held the Cutters off the board in his three innings, allowing just two hits and one walk. Williamsport put up back-to-back two-run innings, highlighted by RBI singles from Trey Wells and Jack Kail. Cooper Vance cut the Scrappers deficit to two with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, his second RBI of the game, but that was as close as the Mahoning Valley would get. Kail’s RBI ground-rule double and Jake Zitella’s RBI single highlighted the four-run ninth inning to put the game out of reach. Down to their final strike of the game, Jayden Hylton went yard for his third of the game and firth MLB Draft League home run. The home run was the only blemish on Bobby Helt’s return to the MLB Draft League, picking up the save over 2.2 innings while striking out four.

Thursday

West Virginia (5) vs Aberdeen (2): BOX SCORE - Drew Townson got the start for West Virginia and gave the offense time to get settled in as he held the IronBirds to just one run on three hits over five strong innings. Elijah Cook got the Black Bears on the board in the third with an RBI double (100.6 mph) and Ben Barrett followed it up with his second of three hits, an RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0. Patrick McCullough cut into the lead in the fourth with an RBI double of his own, but the Black Bears swiftly answered in the bottom half with a Cole Kitchens solo shot, his third home run in his past four games. Cook came through again in the fifth with an RBI single, extending the lead and Alec DeMartino iced the game with a solo home run in the eighth to make it 5-2. Dawson Hall held Aberdeen to just one hit over the final two frames and struck out two, earning his second save of the summer. McCullough led the IronBirds with a pair of knocks while Isaiah Parido had a hit, walk, two runs scored and a stolen base.

Mahoning Valley (2) vs Williamsport (1): BOX SCORE - If you enjoy pitching, this was the game for you as the two pitching staffs combined to strike out 25 batters and allowed just ten hits. Williamsport’s Evan Grimes carried a no-hitter into the seventh and lost it on a two-out single, settling for seven shutout innings while surrendering just one hit, one walk and struck out nine. On the other side, Alex Llinas allowed just one run over five innings while striking out six. Nick Barone drove in the only run through the first seven innings with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Maddox Mihalakis helped push across the tying run in the eighth on an RBI single and with the bases loaded and two out in bottom nine, he drove in the winning run via an error on the infield. Despite the two marvellous starting pitchers, Mahoning Valley’s Reagan Rivera walked away with the win, striking out three of the four he faced in the eighth and ninth while retiring all four. Williamsport’s Jack Kail was the only player in the game with multiple hits and he also had the biggest swing with a two-out triple in the eighth.

Trenton (9) vs State College (4): BOX SCORE - The Thunder took the second game of the series to move within one game of the Spikes in first place. Trenton seized control early in the game with a four-run first inning on a Daniel Murillo single, Cy Turner two-run single and Ty Stecko double all with two outs. That lead would be extended to 5-0 in the second on a solo home run by Julian Swift (372 feet, 94.9-mph exit velocity) and four more runs to come in the third and fourth innings. Led by a four-hit night from Nyan Hayes, State College shortened Trenton’s lead in the third inning with two runs as the center fielder drove in the first run and scored the second. Pitching-wise, Ryan Reich followed up a seven-strikeout relief appearance on Saturday, July 25 with a seven-strikeout start that also lasted for four innings.

Friday

State College (11) @ Trenton (3): BOX SCORE - The Spikes avoided the sweep and remain at the top of the standings as Justin Journette joins elite MLB Draft League company. The outfielder, who also has the longest home run in league history, became the 14th Draft Leaguer to record five hits in one game. Amongst the group, Journette is the only one to also drive in five runs. Also contributing offensively, Hudson Shupe reached base four times with three hits, including a triple and double while driving in a run and scoring four times. For State College, Haden Luke made his third start of the summer and held the Thunder scoreless through five innings while striking out six. For Trenton, Jake Koonin led off the offense with a three-hit night and an RBI and Cy Turner also had three hits and two RBI.

Aberdeen (10) @ West Virginia (4): BOX SCORE - Early home runs from the IronBirds moved them into second place and a game and a half back of the second half. Jevin Relaford, the second batter of the game, connected on his third home run of the summer (370 feet, 93.9-mph exit velocity) in the second inning, Brylan West went deep for the first time this summer on a 387-foot blast to left with an exit velocity of 94.7 mph. West would end the night with two hits and three RBI with the final knock and runs coming on a two-run single in the seventh. For West Virginia, Alec DeMartino led the team with two RBI and behind him in the order, Jackson Trout had two hits, including a ninth-inning RBI-double.

Mahoning Valley (4) vs Williamsport (3): BOX SCORE - For the second straight night, the Scrappers walked it off. Through the first five innings, Mahoning Valley held a 2-0 lead on RBI swings from Cooper Vance. In the sixth, Williamsport would tie it up on a Nick Barone triple and Jack Kail sacrifice fly, answered in the bottom half on a Tervell Johnson double. Kail would deliver again in the eighth to tie with an RBI-single that scored James McCoy who tripled two batters before. In the ninth, the Scrappers would load the bases with two outs, setting up Cayden Evans who singled into right field for the walk-off victory.

Saturday

West Virginia (7) vs Mahoning Valley (3): BOX SCORE - The pitching performance of Julian Newman wasn’t enough for the Scrappers as a five-run seventh from West Virginia resulted in the Black Bears’ home win. The Mahoning Valley right-hander made his first start since the beginning of the second half and struck out 11 batters, the most in a Draft League game this season. Newman went four innings deep and surrendered two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk. By the time the next pitcher came in, the Scrappers took the lead with a fourth inning walk, a game-tying Maddox Mihalakis triple who would score later on a sacrifice fly. The inning where West Virginia took control of the game started with an RBI-single by Ian Collier to tie at three, a Zack Thompson RBI in the midst of a three-hit night, and Alec DeMartino double, wild pitch and Kevin Jones single to cap off the five runs.

Williamsport (11) vs Trenton (6): BOX SCORE - The Crosscutters moved back above .500 by taking control through the first eight innings with 22 total bases. Nick Romano led the offense with a four-hit night that included two doubles, four runs and a walk. Behind him, Owen Prince accounted for three runs with an RBI and two runs scored, stealing two bases and walking three times. Sam DeCarlo and Matthew Williams also tallied home runs for Williamsport, the first by DeCarlo coming in the second inning (392 feet, 96.7-mph exit velocity) and Williams in the sixth (399 feet, 107.2-mph exit velocity). On the mound, Kenney Fabian’s start went six innings as the right-hander struck out four on five hits, allowing one run in his final frame. In the ninth, the Thunder flirted with rallying by scoring five runs, four of them coming on base hits and the fifth on a ground out.

Sunday

Aberdeen (5) vs State College (3): BOX SCORE - In a rain shortened five innings game, the IronBirds held off a final inning comeback from the Spikes and are now just a half game back of State College for first. After a late start, the IronBirds quickly got the fans on their feet with back-to-back first inning RBI doubles from Dylan Winebrenner and Brylan West to take a 2-0 lead. They continued to flex their muscle in the fourth, pushing across three more on Jevin Relaford RBI double, followed by Isaiah Parido’s first MLB Draft League home run to make it 5-0. The Spikes didn’t go away quietly, sending nine batters to the plate in the fifth and final inning. Two singles and four hit-by-pitches allowed the Spikes to score three, but ultimately stranded the bases loaded with the tying run at second and go-ahead run at first. Nyan Hayes, Justin Journette and Jackson Rains provided the three hits for State College and Aberdeen’s first baseman, West, led the game with three hits. Ethan Phillips secured his first MLB Draft League win in the four inning start while Billy Barlow secured his first MLB Draft League save as he held down the final inning.

Mahoning Valley (13) vs West Virginia (5): BOX SCORE - The Scrappers ended the week with a two-game split after compiling 13 hits and 22 bases as a unit to combat the Black Bears’ early home runs. The day started with Mahoning Valley taking the lead in the first as Jayden Hylton scored on a sacrifice fly after leading the game off with a hit. It wouldn’t be his only impact on the day as the right fielder went four-for-six with a triple, three RBI and three runs. After the top of the first, lightning struck, putting the game in a delay that lasted nearly an hour and a half. Once resumed, West Virginia’s offense came through as Ben Barrett tripled in the game-tying run and scored the go-ahead run on a Zack Thompson double. In the fourth, Mahoning Valley would tie on a throwing error on a stolen base attempt followed by Hylton driving in the go-ahead run. In the bottom half, Thompson would come through again to tie with his third home run of the summer (369 feet, 99.3-mph exit velocity). An inning later with a runner on first and two outs, Barrett got a hold of his second on a high heater to the opposite field for a go-ahead, two-run home run (376 feet, 98.1-mph exit velocity), his second of the summer. Half an inning later, it would be the second half’s RBI leader, Maddox Mihalakis coming through to highlight a four RBI day with a three-run, go-ahead home run (412 feet, 103.5-mph exit velocity) to also take the half’s home run lead with six. The Scrappers would extend their lead via a Zion Williams solo home run (393 feet, 103.9-mph exit velocity) for his fourth and six more runs in the ninth. Pitching-wise, both starting pitchers worked through five complete innings as Mahoning Valley’s Clayton Burke struck out nine and West Virginia’s Hunter Holzemer struck out seven. Justin Abercrombie would close the game for the Scrappers by earning all three outs with a strikeout and allowing one batter to reach via a walk.
