Draft League Prospect Report: Week 7 - Pitchers

PROSPECT REPORT (16x9) (5)

Colton Cosper, LHP, Williamsport - Jumping out to a 2-0 record with a 0.53 ERA in his first three starts covering 17 innings for the Crosscutters, the 22-year-old southpaw has also struck out 20 against just one walk. A touch-feel lefty who creates deception with a compact arm path, Cosper works quick with a lower slot release (4.9’). His arsenal is led by a zone-filling changeup at 83-84 mph with a usage rate of 62.8% and 71.3% strike rate. He’ll also spin a mid-70s gyro breaking ball that has missed barrels. His overall pitch mix has yet to find a barrel and the max exit velocity against is just 92 mph. In four years at Mercer, Cosper totaled 280 innings, walking just 65 batters (2.1 BB/9) and striking out 230, coming off of a senior year that was finished by a seven-strikeout complete game.

Andrew D’Alessio, RHP, State College - The 22 year-old Princeton graduate operates loose and easy from a three-quarter release point. He’s pitched just 6 1/3 innings so far but has been a consistent performer over his first four appearances with a 2.83 ERA on seven strikeouts and a 0.95 WHIP. He has missed barrels and painted corners with a sinker/slider and occasional changeup mix. His sinker has topped at 94 mph with a 2400+ spin rate, showing plus life with movement that has averaged 19.3” HB and 4.5” IVB. His low-80s slider spins at over 2600+ rpm and heads in the opposite direction with -11.1 HB, while his changeup nestles in the 83-85 mph range with plenty of arm side life.

Jacob Phillips, LHP, Frederick- The former Georgia Southern left-hander has made five appearances totaling 7 1/3 innings to start the second half of the Draft League season. He’s struck out 13 against just three walks while holding opponents to a .143 batting average to go along with a 0.95 WHIP. From a high three-quarter release, his strike-throwing attack is led by a 89-90 mph fastball that he locates mostly up in the zone, but shows the ability to spot down on occasion. An above average spinner, averaging nearly 2400 rpm with a good movement profile of 17.7” IVB and .93” HB, he fills the pitch up at a 74% strike rate. Phillips can also subtract spin (2000 rpm) with an effective 80 mph changeup, before finishing with his grip-n-rip high-spin slider (2650+ rpm). This 78-80 mph breaker has been his most effective pitch to date with a strike rate of 72%, a whiff rate of 61.5% and in-zone whiff of 55.6%. The pure velocity may not attract full attention, but Phillips misses barrels and overall as a “whole is greater than the sum of the parts” type of arm who does deserve greater attention for a shot in affiliated professional baseball.

Andrew Ronne, RHP, Trenton - The 6-foot-3, 215-pound right-hander has shown a three-pitch arsenal of a mid-90s fastball, 83-85 mph slider and 81-82 mph curve. Over 20 2/3 innings in the Draft League this summer, he’s avoided hard contact with zero batted balls off the barrel and a max exit velocity of just 96.2 mph. There’s also good deception with a close to the chest arm action that has aided his 26 strikeouts. The former East Tennessee State reliever, struck out 134 in 132 innings over four seasons for the Buccaneers and with improved strike-throwing on his mid-90s fastball 58.7% of the time, Ronne should be a lock to receive consideration from affiliated clubs.

Jason Shockley, RHP, State College - A 6-foot-2, 225-pound two-way talent from the University of Richmond, Shockley has focused his talents solely on the mound in the Draft League where he’s currently compiled a 3.38 ERA over 14 appearances and 18 2/3 innings. The 22-year-old has struck out 20, relying upon a four pitch mix composed of a 2-seamer, 4-seamer, slider and occasional changeup. His sinker has decent shape and is complimented by a zone-filling slider that he uses 49% of the time. The pitch has produced a high strike rate of 68.1% and whiff rate of 54%. The 82-84 mph offering spins near 2600 rpm and bends into the zone with a season average shape of 3.5” IVB and -8.0” HB.
