The 2025 MLB Draft featured the second-most draft picks from the MLB Draft League with 48, edging out 2022 and 2023 by one. The league would also tie the 2024 draft with the most picks to play in the same summer with 36. Overall, the Draft League has seen 233 players selected in the MLB Draft since the league’s inception in 2021.
RHP Miguel Sime Jr. (2025 Trenton Thunder) was the league’s first pick, going to the Washington Nationals with the No. 111 overall pick in the fourth round. The 18-year-old is the second highest high school pick in league history, edging out Eddie Rynders (2024 Williamsport Crosscutter) with the No. 112 pick in 2024 and behind Davin Saltiban (2023 West Virginia Black Bears) as the No. 98 pick in 2023. Overall, Sime is the fifth highest pick in league history after appearing in two regular season games plus the exhibition with the Cape Cod Baseball League and recording the league’s fastest pitch with a 100.9 mph fastball.
Led by the Nationals’ draftee, five high school players that participated in the first half were selected, tying the 2024 draft. Amongst the group were Sime, SS Bruin Agbayani (6th round, No. 179, Frederick), C Truitt Madonna (11th round, No. 340, Frederick), SS Logan Dawson (16th round, No. 491, Trenton) and LHP Nick Frusco (20th round, No. 593, Trenton).
Following Sime, RHP Micah Bucknam (2022 Trenton Thunder) followed one pick later at No. 112 by the Toronto Blue Jays to be the first non-2025 player selected. The selection ties Rynders for sixth-highest all-time and second highest amongst 2022 alumni, behind Sabin Ceballos (2022 Williamsport Crosscutter) who was selected No. 94 in 2023.
In total, 34 pitchers were selected this year to set a new best, passing the 2022 draft of 32. The group this year includes 29 right-handed, a league-best passing 28 in 2022, and five left-handed pitchers. Amongst the league’s teams, the Trenton Thunder had the most pitchers selected with eight, tying the 2023 State College Spikes and 2022 West Virginia Black Bears.
After the first two Draft League selections were pitchers, the first position players to go both came from the Williamsport Crosscutters. At pick No. 162, first baseman Riley Nelson (2024) was taken by the Cleveland Guardians, making him the second-highest drafted Crosscutter behind Rynders. Nine picks later at No. 171, the Nationals selected catcher Boston Smith (2025) to be the first position player that appeared in this year’s first half.
Two rounds carried the most MLB Draft League selections at six in the 16th and 20th round. The 16th-round picks were within two selections of each other featuring RHP Denton Biller (Orioles No. 484, 2025 Williamsport Crosscutter), OF Chase Call (Astros No. 486, 2023 State College Spike), RHP Nico Wagner (Braves No. 487, 2025 Frederick Keys), RHP Joe Ruzicka (Tigers No. 489, 2025 West Virginia Black Bear), OF Cardell Thibodeaux (Padres No. 490, 2025 Mahoning Valley Scrappers) and Dawson. The 20th round saw RHP Cannon Pickell (Marlins No. 588, 2025 West Virginia Black Bears), RHP Sam Tookoian (Angels No. 589, 2025 West Virginia Black Bears), Frusco, C Chase Heath (Cardinals No. 600, 2025 Mahoning Valley Scrappers), RHP Kamden Edge (Royals No. 608, 2025 Mahoning Valley Scrappers) and SS Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek (Yankees No. 614, 2024 Trenton Thunder).
Breaking down by team, the Frederick Keys tied the all-time record with 11 total draft picks, contributing seven of the league’s 34 pitchers and tied the year for most hitters selected at four. The Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Trenton Thunder each had 10 selections; Mahoning Valley tied with the Keys having four hitters selected, and Trenton had the most pitchers (8) and high school players (3) drafted. The Williamsport Crosscutters and State College Spikes had six selections with the West Virginia Black Bears rounding out the group with five.
The Kansas City Royals led Major League Baseball with six draft picks, the most picks by a single team in one draft, pacing the American League Central’s leading 13. The San Diego Padres followed with four picks to account for the National League West’s eight that tied second with the National League East. Four teams would select three MLB Draft Leaguers between the Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, Washington Nationals and the Minnesota Twins.
