Monday

Aberdeen (14) @ Trenton (9): BOX SCORE - The IronBirds took sole possession of first place with their 10th road win in the second half. The Thunder started with the lead with a first inning, three-run home run by Bryson Trammell (367 feet, 97.8-mph exit velocity) but Aberdeen had an answer in the second inning. Via a two-out rally, Patrick McCullough singled in a run for his first of three hits and first of two RBI. He would then score his first of three runs on a Jacoby Radcliffe two-run single to tie the game at three, scoring on Jevin Relaford’s two-run triple for the go-ahead run. Relaford would go on to drive in two more runs ahead of the hour and a half rain delay on a single in the third and then drive in a fifth after the delay in the fifth. Ahead of the rain delay as well, Trenton would go deep again for another three-run home run, this time by Michael Whooley (390 ft, 101.1 mph exit velocity) in the third inning.

Mahoning Valley (4) vs West Virginia (4) MV wins in sudden death extra inning: BOX SCORE - Both teams came out swinging early in the series opener with the Black Bears leading 3-2 through two innings. Cayden Gaskin got the offense started immediately with a leadoff home run in the top of the first, his second consecutive game with a homer. Mike Young evened the score in the bottom half with an RBI single, his first of three hits on the night. But the Black Bears flexed their muscle again in the second with a Tyvon Moore two-run homer, his first in the MLB Draft League. Maddox Mihalakis cut the deficit to one with an RBI double in the second and eventually took the lead in the fifth with another RBI single from Young. The Black Bears evened the score in the seventh but ultimately fell in sudden death as the Scrappers left victorious on a walk-off single from Zion Williams.

Tuesday

State College (9) vs Williamsport (7): BOX SCORE - The Spikes opened the three-game set against their in-state rivals with 13 hits and Patrick Morris locking it down out of the bullpen. Elie Kligman and Jett Buck led the offense with two hits and three RBI a piece, along with a three-hit game from CJ Richmond and two hits by Blake Bradford. For the Crosscutters, James McCoy and Matthew Williams both went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, slugging their seventh home run of the summer, staying tied for first in the second half. McCoy’s home run came in the sixth inning, traveling 401 feet to right center with an exit velocity of 104.3 mph. Williams followed an inning later that, at the time, brought Williamsport within one in the seventh with an exit velocity of 107.3 mph, going 416 feet to center. After the home run, Morris came into the game for State College and would achieve a seven-out save for his sixth of the summer, striking out two with no runs.

Aberdeen (7) vs Trenton (6): BOX SCORE - IronBirds starting pitcher Anthony Anselmo helped secure a two game sweep and now have a 1.5 game lead in the second half standings. Anselmo didn’t allow a run over his four innings and worked out of a couple jams, allowing the offense to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Leading the charge offensively was Patrick McCullough with four hits, Max Galvin with a triple and two runs scored and Dylan Winebrenner with a hit, walk, sacrifice fly and two RBI. Trenton mounted a late comeback with two runs in both the sixth and seventh before AJ Swader made it a one run game on a two-run shot with two outs in the ninth. Swader’s two hits, as well as two for Michael Whooley, paced the team. Throwing the final three frames for Trenton, Blake Donnan was superb as he allowed no runs on four hits while striking out three.

Mahoning Valley (5) vs West Virginia (0): BOX SCORE - Jeremiah Newman’s longest start of the year consisted of him carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Going seven innings, the right-hander struck out four and surrendered just two hits and walked four without allowing a run. Following him, Lynden Bruegman and Justin Abercrombie combined for two perfect innings with the former striking out two and the latter having one. The Scrappers got off to a lead right away with a leadoff homer from Maddox Mihalakis (430 feet, 110-mph exit velocity) in the bottom of the first. His seventh of the summer, the homer gave the third baseman 38 RBI, tying the MLB Draft League’s all-time record for the most in the second half. Davis Mauzy also homered (360 feet, 102.5-mph exit velocity) with his first of the summer in the fifth inning.

Wednesday

Williamsport (4) @ State College (3): BOX SCORE - The Crosscutters split the two-game series in Josh Willitts’ Pitcher of the Week title defense and overcame a late push from the Spikes. The two-time Pitcher of the Week completed six innings and worked into the seventh, striking out seven batters and carried a perfect game through 4.2 innings. During the perfect game bid, Williamsport put up two runs via a Nick Barone sacrifice fly in the second inning and James McCoy’s eighth home run (406 feet, 100.3-mph exit velocity) in the third inning to the opposite field. Taking the sole lead in home runs, he became the fifth player in MLB Draft League history to reach that mark in the second half. In the seventh before Willitts’ removal, State College plated its first run on a CJ Richmond double, later coming around to score and tie the game when Blake Bradford took a bases loaded hit by pitch. The Spikes would then take the lead the next batter on an Ethan Swidler walk. With two outs in the top of the eighth, the Crosscutters would answer back for the game-winning run as Jake Zitella tripled to drive in two runs. Matthew Mariano would come into the game in the seventh for Williamsport, serving the walk to put State College ahead but would buckle down to not allow a hit the rest of the game, striking out six of the eight batters he faced.

Thursday

Williamsport (6) vs West Virginia (4): BOX SCORE - The Crosscutters secured their sixth win in their past seven games and are tied once again with Aberdeen for first place in the second half. Both starting pitchers were a big story in this one but the Cutters put up three late to seal the deal. Black Bears starter Drew Townson was marvelous, allowing just one earned run (three runs) over seven frames on just four hits and he struck out seven. On the other side, Bobby Helt went five innings and allowed just one earned run (three runs), as well, while striking out five. Matthew Williams opened the scoring in the second with his eighth home run of the second half before Jake Zitella added to the lead with an RBI single. A Jackson Trout sacrifice fly and Kevin Jones RBI groundout evened the score. Williamsport finally broke things open in the eighth with a Williams RBI walk and Santino Panaro safety squeeze bunt before Jack Kail provided the insurance run on an RBI single in the ninth. Luc Lavigueur earned the win, pitching a scoreless sixth and seventh while David Pollard allowed one run over the eighth and ninth, picking up his first save.

Trenton (3) vs State College (0): BOX SCORE - Starting pitchers commanded the series opener, covering 14 of the 18 innings pitched. Billy Morris was superb for the Thunder, allowing just three hits and one walk over eight scoreless innings, picking up his fourth win of the second half. Trey Cehajic allowed a pair of unearned runs in the first but those were the only two he’d allow over his six innings, striking out six and lowering his August ERA to 2.95. Michael Whooley provided the two first inning runs on a two-run single, the only two RBI in the game. Joe Colucci earned the save with a scoreless ninth and Anthony Spizzoucco allowed just one hit and an unearned run over the final three frames for State College.

Mahoning Valley (9) vs Aberdeen (0): BOX SCORE - Once again, it was the starting pitchers that stole the show as Mahoning Valley led just 1-0 half way through the game. Clayton Burke got the start for the Scrappers and went six innings deep, earning the win on four hits, two walks and he struck out three. Billy Barlow on the other end struck out eight over five innings and allowed just one run. Cayden Evans opened the scoring in the first with an RBI single and finally broke it open with a three-run sixth inning. The big inning was provided by a Jason Torres RBI double, Kaikea Harrison RBI single and Davis Mauzy RBI single. The Scrappers' biggest swing came in the ninth inning on Mike Young’s first MLB Draft League home run, extending the lead to 7-0. Mauzy led Mahoning Valley’s with four hits, including three RBI singles. Closing out the shutout was Will Marquart, Nick Anello and Reagan Rivera each pitching a scoreless inning.

Friday

State College (3) vs Trenton (2): BOX SCORE - The Spikes got back in the win column with a Friday night thriller that ended in a walk-off blast from CJ Richmond. After striking out nine last week, Haden Luke returned to the mound and struck out eight through three scoreless innings. The second most strikeouts in a game for the right-hander this summer. Coming in after Luke for two scoreless was Zach Kilby who struck out two batters of his own. During that time,the Spikes got to a 1-0 lead after Camden Ross grounded into a bases loaded double play where Blake Bradford scored the opening run. In the sixth, the Thunder’s first run would come on a single by Cy Turner, his second hit of the game that came with an exit velocity over 100 mph. In the seventh, Trenton would start the dramatics with a leadoff pinch-hit home run by AJ Swader (400 feet, 109.5-mph exit velocity) on the second pitch he saw for his fifth of the summer. In the eighth inning, Patrick Morris would be tasked with keeping the Thunder off the board to spark a Spikes rally and did so by working two perfect innings with three strikeouts. In the bottom of the ninth, Richmond would step up as the leadoff man and deliver the walk-off home run with a 401-foot shot to right center field, 104.6 mph off the bat for his eighth of the entire summer.

Aberdeen (3) vs Mahoning Valley (1): BOX SCORE - The IronBirds prevented taking back-to-back losses with another one-run start by Josh Milleville and shutdown relief pitching. Aberdeen’s starter went six innings deep for his third win of the summer, striking out five on five hits and walking none. To follow, Jacob Faulkner put together a scoreless frame with Roman Harrison tallying a six-out save with four strikeouts. The IronBirds plated their first run in the second inning on a balk, followed by an RBI single from Randy Flores that scored Patrick McCullough who would account for two runs. The second coming from a Brylan West single in the fourth. The Scrappers’ one run would be scored in the third inning on a Jayden Hylton single. Mahoning Valley’s pitching would hold Aberdeen to zero baserunners in the final 3 1/3 innings, led by 1 2/3 innings from Blake Barker who struck out two.

Williamsport (12) @ West Virginia (2): BOX SCORE - The Crosscutters took their third straight win behind the offensive production of James McCoy and a combined 10 strikeouts from the pitching staff. McCoy would end the night 2-for-3 with five RBI and three runs with a double and a home run. A solo blast in the top of the ninth (372 feet, 101.2-mph exit velocity) would be his ninth of the half, putting him at the time in the sole lead across the league and one away from the most in one half. The following batter, Matthew Williams, would go back-to-back with McCoy for his ninth home run (398 feet, 103.2-mph exit velocity), bringing the homer lead to a tie again. On the mound, David Case (5 IP, 2 H, 0 R) and Tyler Muscar (2 IP, 2 H, ER) would lead Williamsport with four strikeouts. On the other side, Austin Decker-Petty would lead the Black Bears with two innings of relief with one unearned run and five strikeouts. Cayden Gaskin would make MLB Draft League history on the bases with his 35th stolen base of the second half, the most in the professional portion of the summer all-time. Owen Petrich would account for both of West Virginia’s runs with Jackson Trout driving in the first and Elijah Cook the second.

Saturday

State College (3) vs Trenton (0) - Five innings: BOX SCORE - Jackson Mayo went the distance for the Spikes in the rain shortened game, allowing just two hits, two walks and struck out four. State College’s three runs were provided on a trio of RBI singles from Ethan Swidler, Nyan Hayes and Camden Ross. The Spikes took the series and are now just 2.5 games back of first place Aberdeen.

Aberdeen (10) vs Mahoning Valley (9): BOX SCORE - The finale was a wild one in Aberdeen as the two teams traded punches down to the final pitch as the two teams combined for 16 hits and 19 runs. Trailing 3-1 in the second, Davis Mauzy hit an inside-the-park home run for the Scrappers, leveling the score at 3-3. Aberdeen trailed 7-5 entering bottom eight and jumped ahead 9-7 on a Jevin Relaford RBI single and Patrick McCullough RBI single and error, allowing the bases clear. The back and forth affair was just getting started as Julian Hernandez blasted a game-tying two-run shot with one out in the top of the ninth. With the scored tied entering the bottom of the ninth, the Scrappers needed just two batters as Brylan West walked and Taj Bates immediately drove him in with a game winning double. Another series win for the IronBirds as they hold serve atop of the second half standings.

Sunday

Williamsport (12) vs Aberdeen (3): BOX SCORE - In a massive series between the second half’s two best teams, the Cutters hit and kept on hitting with five players collecting multiple hits. Matthew Williams broke the deadlock with a third inning two-run blast, his third straight game with a home run and second half leading 10th. Williamsport really broke it open in the seventh with three runs to extend the lead to 9-1. Williamsport’s other bopper, James McCoy, dramatically tied Williams with his 10th second half home run in the ninth inning, marking his fifth home run in his past six games. Williams led the way with three hits, followed by two for McCoy, Jack Kail, Santino Panaro and Sam DeCarlo. Evan Grimes allowed just one over three innings in his start, but the winning pitcher was Brandon Scott on five stellar innings out of the bullpen, allowing just two runs. Max Galvin paced Aberdeen’s offense, driving in two of their three runs and Patrick McCullough led the offense with three hits, giving him 16 total on the week. Williams and McCoy became the first Crosscutters to hit double digit home runs in the second half and Chris Stanfield broke the club record with his 39th stolen base.

Mahoning Valley (6) vs Trenton (1): BOX SCORE - Jeremiah Newman was the star of the show in the series opener, becoming the second pitcher this summer to go the distance and pitch all nine innings. Newman earned his fourth win, allowing just one run on three hits, two walks and struck out four. Newman pitched 16 innings on the week and surrendered just one run. Jacob Smoot was impressive on the other end, as well, pitching four hitless innings and allowed just one earned run while striking out four. Despite putting up six runs, the Scrappers had just five hits and two RBI hits, coming on a single from Jason Torres in the third and Cooper Vance double in the eighth. In a game that had just eight total hits, Torres led the way with a pair and Vance was on base three times and came around to score all three times.

State College (11) vs West Virginia (4): BOX SCORE - State College got a quick injection on the road on a first inning grand slam from Justin Journette, jumping ahead 4-0 early. West Virginia struck back immediately with three of their own but another Spikes blast from Camden Ross, a three-run homer, helped extend the lead to 7-3. Capping off the late insurance runs was a CJ Richmond RBI single and Jackson Rains RBI double, his final of three hits on the day. Charlie Smith picked up the win, tossing 3.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen, allowing just three hits and struck out two. For West Virginia, Jackson Trout carried the load with three hits and a double, while Cayden Gaskin and Owen Petrich each had two hits and a double. On the mound, Ryan Ure and Reece Clapp each pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth before State College’s Josh Beck did so in the ninth to close out the game.
