The MLB Draft League announced that the Houston Astros have purchased the contract of SS Drew Wyers from the Trenton Thunder. He is the second Draft League professional player to have their contract purchased by a Major League club this season and 16th since the league implemented a professional, second-half format in 2022.

Wyers, 23, played 15 games for the Thunder with nine in the first half and six in the second. He hit .281 with a .432 on-base percentage, slugging .438 and had an OPS of .877 while driving in nine runs and scoring just as much. In the second half, Wyers slashed .533/.650/.867 with a 1.517 OPS.

His Draft League tenure was highlighted by a four-hit performance on Sunday, July 19 on the road against Williamsport. In that game, the right-handed hitter cracked his one MLB Draft League home run, a grand slam, while singling three times.

Wyers joins Carson Estridge (West Virginia) as the second player from this season to not only have their contract purchased, but be purchased by the Astros. He is also the second position player in MLB Draft League history to have their second half contract purchased after Casey Yamauchi (Frederick) in 2023 by the Athletics.

A native of Columbus, N.J., Wyers joined his hometown team after his senior season with Mississippi State where he hit .333 through 33 games with four home runs and 16 RBIs. Prior to that, he was named the 2025 Len Harlow America East Player of the Year with Bryant in Rhode Island after hitting a .407 which ranked 10th in the entire nation with a .521 on-base percentage, .710 slugging percentage and 1.231 OPS.

Wyers’ purchased contract comes after a historic 2026 MLB Draft within the Draft League with 58 players selected. Additionally, the league tied the 2024 and 2025 seasons with 36 draft picks who played in the same summer as their selection. In the league’s sixth season, the MLB Draft League has produced 291 MLB Draft Picks and more than 200 players have signed as undrafted free agents.
