The Scrappers pitched their first combined shutout of the season, as Alex Kapine and Jay Newman combined to hold West Virginia scoreless in a 9-0 win.
Kanipe would get into a few jams in his five innings of work, but stranded six runners on base over 88 pitches. He also tallied five strikeouts in his first start as a Scrapper.
He would give way to Jay Newman in the sixth, and Newman was ultra efficient, needing just six pitches to retire the side in the sixth and four pitches to do it in the eighth. Throwing just 32 pitches his first three innings would allow him to get the fourth and complete the 12 out save, his third save of the year.
The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the fourth, when Kaikea Harrison delivered a two out RBI single for the game’s first run. Jordan Taylor would follow that up with an RBI double to make it 2-0 Scrappers.
They would get two more in the fifth when Zion Williams clubbed his first home run of the season, a two run shot to give the Scrappers a four run lead.
Cooper Vance delivered more insurance in the sixth with an RBI single, and it would be 5-0 going into the eighth.
The Scrappers would put the game truly out of reach there, as Jaden Hylton singled in a run, Maddox Mihalakis doubled in his team high 14th RBI, Hylton later scored on a wild pitch, and Vance drove in another on a groundout to plate four runs in the inning, making the score 9-0.
Newman got two of his four strikeouts in the game to shut the door in the ninth, and the Scrappers would get the win to move to 3-9 in the second half of the season.
They go for the series win Friday, July 25, 7:17 p.m. first pitch.
