The Scrappers got back in the win column on Sunday afternoon with a 7-4 win over the State College Spikes.
Mahoning Valley got the scoring started in the first inning with a Bryce Hibbard two out RBI single. It would be 1-0 after the first.
Jordan Taylor made multiple big time plays in the game for the Scrappers. He would make the first in the second inning, throwing out Jackson Rains trying to score on a flyout to center field. The outfield assist was his first of the season and ended the inning.
State College would get on the board in the third courtesy of Trent Turner, who doubled for the third time in the two game series. He would end the day with three hits, six total for the series.
The score would be 1-1 going into the fourth, when the Spikes took their first and only lead of the game. Justin Journette would hit into a sacrifice fly to score the go ahead run, and a wild pitch to the next batter would allow another to score. State College would lead 3-1 going to the bottom of the inning.
With nobody on base and two outs, the Scrappers bats woke up. Jackson Hugus singled, then Taylor delivered again with a game tying home run, his second in as many games. Jaden Hylton and Cooper Vance would draw walks to follow the home run. They would be driven in on singles by Maddox Mihalakis and Zion Williams to make it 5-3 Scrappers.
State College got one back in the fifth on a CJ Richmond RBI single, but that would be it for the Spikes offense in the game. Dominic Desch, Blake Barker, Justin Abercrombie, Reagen Rivera, and Jay Newman would combine to throw 5.2 innings of one run ball to get the win.
Mahoning Valley got insurance in the eighth on a Vance RBI fielder's choice and another Mihalakis RBI single to go up 7-4, which would be the final.
Desch gets credit for the win, Newman would collect his second save of the season. Mahoning Valley hits the road for a two game series against Aberdeen starting Monday night (7/20).
