(Trenton, NJ) – The State College Spikes had some of the hottest bats in the draft league Tuesday night, as they slashed 16 hits, and plated 14 runs in the first of three against the Thunder. The Spikes struck in the first when left fielder Carlos Contreras laced a two-out triple down the right-field line that scored the first two runs of the game. They got their second triple of the game in the next inning off the bat of Jesse Fonteboa. He would come around to score on a single for the first of two runs in State College’s half of the third. The Spikes scored 2 runs each in the third and fourth innings and would score runs in seven of their nine innings at the plate.
The Thunder bats made some noise in their half of the second inning, when Dan Covino blasted his first home run of the season over the right-field wall. Covino’s homer, a two-run shot, plated Joe Impeduglia and cut the deficit in half to make it 4-2. The Deleware product took home Hyatt Regency Princeton Thunder Player of The Game honors for the first time this year. Trenton scored their third and final run of the night on a long ball to left from Kolby Johnson, that was his first of the year.
The offense was nonstop for the Spikes in game one, hitting three long balls in the 14-3 victory. Two of their home runs came with a man on base. State College added one run in the eight and four in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
