Dreylin Holmes, Cregg Scherrer earn MLB Draft League weekly honors

Holmes and Scherrer named Draft League Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively

NEW YORK -- The MLB Draft League announced that Mahoning Valley’s Dreylin Holmes and Trenton’s Cregg Scherrer were named Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the period of July 29 to Aug. 4.

Holmes, 22, received Hitter of the Week honors after batting .458 (11-for-24) with three doubles, two home runs, eight runs scored and five stolen bases in seven games for the Scrappers. The outfielder led all MLB Draft League hitters during the period in hits, home runs (tied), runs scored (tied) and steals. He also finished second in slugging (.833), OPS (1.364), extra-base hits (5) and total bases (20). His average and .536 OBP were both fourth.

Holmes hit safely in five straight games for Mahoning Valley to begin the week, recording four multi-hit performances led by a pair of three-hit games. Facing West Virginia at home July 29, Holmes powered the Scrappers with a solo homer, an RBI double and a run-scoring single as part of a 3-for-4, three-RBI performance that included a walk. After going 1-for-3 with a steal the following day, Holmes closed out the series with his second double of the week, finishing the game 2-for-4.

Holmes launched his second homer of the week Aug. 1 at State College, crushing a solo shot 462 feet to left field at 107.2 mph off the bat before finishing 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. On Aug. 2, against the Spikes, Holmes scored four runs and stole four bases, both season-high marks, going 2-for-3 with two walks.

Through 16 games with Mahoning Valley in the Draft League as a professional player, Holmes is hitting .364, fourth-best in the Draft League, ranks among the circuit leaders with four home runs (tied-1st), a .656 slugging (2nd), a 1.081 OPS (2nd), 20 hits (tied-3rd), eight extra-base hits (tied-3rd), 36 total bases (3rd) and 14 runs scored (tied-5th).

A Griffin, Ga., native, Holmes produced a .313/.425/.507 batting line with seven home runs, 27 RBI and 33 runs scored in 42 games this past spring as a Mississippi Valley State senior. In three seasons with the Delta Devils, he hit .298 (139-for-467) with 29 home runs, 26 doubles and a .548 slugging over 131 games. A 2024 HBCU Swingman Classic participant, Holmes came off the bench to hit a pair of singles and score a run in a 2-for-2 performance.

Scherrer, 23, garnered Pitcher of the Week honors after going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 0.57 WHIP and .125 BAA in his lone start for the Thunder. Facing Williamsport on the road, the left-hander scattered three hits and one walk over a season-high seven innings en route to his first professional win. He retired the final 11 batters he faced, throwing 71 of 108 pitches for strikes.

Scherrer is 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA in three second-half starts for the Thunder. He’s held opposing hitters to a .231 average over 17 1/3 innings, compiling 18 strikeouts against nine walks, and has completed at least five innings all three turns. Scherrer also pitched for Trenton during the first half (amateur) portion of the 2024 Draft League season, going 0-1 with a 2.95 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings over eight appearances, including six starts.

A Skaneateles, N.Y., native, Scherrer was 1-3 with a 5.17 ERA in 12 appearances (six starts) as an Albany redshirt senior this past spring. Making 56 appearances (40 starts) in five seasons pitching for the Great Danes, Scherrer was 9-18 with four complete games and one save. He posted a 5.64 ERA in 234 2/3 innings, racking up 228 strikeouts.
