WEEK OF MAY 4
College/Prep
- Mason Brassfield (2022 18U) made two appearances out of the bullpen for TCU and delivered a shutdown performance on each occasion. On Friday, Brassfield entered in the sixth and hurled two hitless frames to preserve TCU’s 3-0 lead while on Sunday, the sophomore took the bump in the sixth and tossed two no-hit innings to maintain TCU’s one-run lead.
- Georgia Tech swept Duke, won its fifth straight game, and junior Drew Burress (2019 15U, 2024 & 2025 CNT) continues to etch his name in the program’s history books, as the three-time alum belted his 13th homer on the season Sunday afternoon to tie the program record for career home runs (57). Burress wreaked havoc this past week, tallying at least two hits apiece the last five games, homering in four straight games, and notching eight RBIs in three games against Duke.
- Ole Miss picked up a crucial conference win over Texas A&M, with Hunter Elliott (2022 CNT) leading the charge from the bump. The Mississippi native delivered six quality innings and limited the Aggies’ bats, allowing only five hits, one earned run, and striking out 11. In addition, Elliott became only the second active Division I pitcher with 300 career strikeouts.
- Gavin Grahovac (2017 12U, 2022 18U, 2024 CNT) posted two multi-hit, multiple-RBI performances this week in Texas A&M’s wins against Prairie View A&M and Ole Miss. He went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs on Tuesday and 2-for-4 with four RBIs on Saturday. Grahovac leads the Aggies in hits and RBIs during SEC play.
- Ryder Helfrick (2025 CNT), one of college baseball’s top catchers, picked up a hit in each of Arkansas’ three games against Oklahoma, scored three runs, and drew four walks. The junior’s performance helped the Razorbacks win the series against a quality Sooners team. Helfrick leads the nation in a variety of statistical categories including defensive runs saved and defensive WAR.
- After an uncharacteristic outing against Kentucky on May 1, Tegan Kuhns (2023 18U) bounced back in dominant fashion on May 8, punching out 15 batters in a seven-inning shutout as the Vols downed No. 4 Texas, 5-1.
- LSU’s Steven Milam (2016 12U) has quietly put together a strong season for the Tigers. He collected two doubles and four RBIs in a midweek win and walked five times during a series at Georgia. Milam has a .407 OBP and .990 FLD% on the season.
- The hot bat belonged to Tyree Reed (2018 15U) this past week for Jackson State, as the redshirt junior upped his team-leading batting average to .386 on the season and extended his hit streak to 13 games. In Jackson State’s past four contests, Reed batted .538, scored nine runs, and forced seven free passes.
Professional
- J.T. Ginn (2017 18U) got the nod for the Athletics, boasted an impressive outing on the bump, and paved the way for a 12-1 victory over the Phillies on May 7. In the win, Ginn hurled eight innings of one-run ball, surrendered only four hits and struck out eight.
- Three-time alum Bryce Harper (2008 16U, 2009 18U, 2026 WBC) mashed on May 5 as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Athletics in a 9-1 rout. In the win, Harper went 3-for-4, homered twice, drove in three runs and scored three runs himself.
- Paul Skenes (2014 12U, 2021 & 2022 CNT, 2026 WBC) was his typical dominant self Wednesday night. The Pirates ace took a perfect game into the fifth inning en route to an eight-inning shutout against the Diamondbacks. Skenes struck out seven, walked none, and allowed only two hits to earn his fifth victory of the season.
- With two outs in the ninth and the game tied at 3-3, Brice Turang (2014 15U, 2016 & 2017 18U, 2026 WBC) faced former World Baseball Classic teammate and Yankee pitcher, David Bednar. Wasting no time, Turang came out first pitch swinging and golfed a hanging curveball over the centerfield fence for a walk-off solo shot on Mother’s Day in a Milwaukee sweep of New York.
- Ralphy Velazquez (2016 12U, 2017 12U) continues to shine in Double-A Akron, as the 20-year-old slugger went 10-for-26 with five doubles in a series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. He leads the RubberDucks with a .308 season average and .915 OPS.
- The Kansas City Royals picked up a 5-1 win over Detroit as Michael Wacha (2011 CNT) kept the Tigers at bay thanks to a seven-inning shutout performance on the mound. Wacha gave up only two hits and collected half a dozen strikeouts on the day.
