
The action continued on day two of the 14U National Team Championship in Cary, North Carolina, as the 12-game slate delivered countless moments of excitement. With pool play wrapping up today and bracket play arriving on Thursday, here’s a look at how the top teams in the country fared.
Furia National 9, Top Dawg National 6
Mark De Leon and Brantley Baskin put up multi-hit efforts as Furia National battled its way to a 9-6 victory over Top Dawg National. The game went back and forth, with each team scoring two runs in the first frame and more in the second. Furia broke through in the fourth inning when they plated four runs, thanks to an RBI single from Jancarlos Nunez and a two-run single from Matthew Ruis. Baskin threw two scoreless innings in relief and Furia prevailed for its second win of the tournament.
USA Prime National 5, Canes Midwest National 0
Prime scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back, as Easton Mauler pushed his team to victory with two hits and two RBIs, and Noah Osterman dominated on the mound. Mauler kicked things off with a two-run single that scored another on an error in the first, and from there on it was the Osterman show. The young pitcher threw six scoreless innings, allowing only three hits in the process and racking up nine punchouts. Jason Spray also recorded three hits to help Prime improve to 2-0 in pool play.
South Charlotte Panthers 2030 Marucci 7, Padres 14U Scout Team 5
The Panthers plated seven runs in the top of the first and fended off a Padres comeback to secure victory in game two of pool play. The South Charlotte squad was able to capitalize on a number of walks, errors, and hit batsmen in the first to build its lead. Myers Frank paced the team at the plate with his one walk and two base-knocks, which included a triple. Patrick Melton allowed only one earned run in 6.2 innings of work as well. The Padres scored five runs over the last four innings to make things interesting, but the Panthers held on for the win.
ZT National Prospects 4, Wow Factor National 1
ZT used the excellent performances of starting pitcher Eiden O’Farrill and reliever Quinten Blackwell to top Wow Factor in a close matchup. O’Farrill tossed four innings on the mound and allowed zero earned runs in the process. He was backed up by three scoreless innings from Blackwell, who closed the game out with a dastardly set of pitches. At the plate, ZT received clutch RBI singles from Daniel Fernandez and Micah Delos Reyes, as well as an RBI triple from Bryant Ju, to scratch four runs across and maintain a perfect record in pool play.
USA Prime National 6, Furia National 6
The closest game of the day ended in a tie after some back-and-forth action. USA Prime started things in the first when they scored three runs on a series of singles that included Brandon Sweeney’s RBI base-knock. Furia National responded in the bottom half with three of their own, as Matthew Ruis smoked an RBI double on a line drive to center. Furia then took the lead with a two-run third, but a three spot in the fifth inning gave Prime the edge once again, thanks to a Noah Osterman two-run inside-the-park homer. A clutch pinch-hit RBI single from Furia’s Julian Rodriguez knotted the game in the bottom of the fifth, and it remained that way as time expired.
Top Dawg National 5, Canes Midwest National 4
Top Dawg came all the way back from a 4-0 deficit to stun Canes Midwest National in one of the best games of the afternoon. Canes Midwest used patient at-bats and strong situational hitting to build up a lead over four innings, with RBI singles from Parker Igleheart and Lenox McKeon headlining the offensive callithump. Griffin Sickler was also strong on the mound for the Canes, as he held Top Dawg scoreless through four. Top Dawg finally pounced on Sickler in the fifth with a five-run barrage that included RBI liners from Myles Kielhorn and Brooks Mckee, and the rally sealed the comeback victory.
ZT National Prospects 13, Padres 14U Scout Team 0
This one was all ZT National, as the Prospects exploded for 10 hits and 13 runs to run-rule the Padres. Jesse Maddox led the offensive attack for ZT, going 2-for-4 with five RBIs and a bases-clearing triple. Quinten Blackwell was equally impressive, as the left fielder went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. On the mound, Trevor Lujan was the star of the show for ZT, as the young right-hander pitched four no-hit innings and racked up a whopping eight strikeouts. Though the Padres eventually recorded a hit, ZT won handedly to finish 3-0 in pool play.
Wow Factor National 8, South Charlotte Panthers 2030 Marucci 0
A steady stream of hits and a near-perfect outing from pitcher Brayson Thompson propelled Wow Factor National to an 8-0 triumph. Thompson was the story of the game, as the Wow Factor Starter pitched five shutout innings on 78 pitches, posting seven strikeouts and only one hit allowed in the process. He was backed up offensively by two hits and two RBIs from Noah Burt, as well as a two-RBI game from Ian Ferguson. A six-run fifth inning capped off the nine-hit day for Wow Factor, giving the squad its second win in as many days.
Canes National 12, SBA Bolts National 4
Canes National used a seven-run third inning to put away SBA Bolts National in run-rule fashion, winning 12-4 in five innings. After some early action from both squads left SBA up 3-2 in the third inning, a brief rain shower began to pour on the stadium field. As fans bemoaned the weather, the Canes National bats came alive. Wil Antunez smoked an RBI double to center, and Carlos Linares followed with a line drive to score another. By the time the onslaught was over, SBA was down 9-3 and the Canes were in the driver’s seat. Brysten Spencer finished with two hits, and Holden Howard and Walker McCrory racked up two RBIs apiece in the Canes National win.
2030 CBU Scout Madsen 11, Arizona Diamondbacks Midwest Scout S2N Select 3
CBU Scout Madsen outhit Diamondbacks Midwest Scout 9-4 and outscored them 11-3 to pick up the team’s first win of the tournament. Owen Chapman paced the CBU hitters on the day, going 2-for-2 with four RBIs and four total bases. Will Galey also had two hits and two runs, and Tucker Farrar earned three walks en route to scoring three runs of his own. On the mound, Judo Straw delivered a strong three-inning outing that saw him walk none and strike out four, all while allowing zero runs in the victory.
TBT Phillies Scout 5, Team Elite 3
TBT Phillies Scout grinded out a 5-0 lead and never gave it up, as the Phillies overcame Team Elite to improve their record to 2-1. A four-run third inning made all the difference for the Phillies, with an RBI triple from Luca Briggs and an RBI single from Junior Jose Cordero pushed TBT in front. Matias Pelaez anchored the Phillies on the mound, allowing only one earned run over 6.2 innings to secure the win. Cordero notched two hits for the Phillies while also catching the entire game behind the plate.
Traction Canes 14U National 7, PRD 6
The final game of the day saw Traction Canes earn a huge come-from-behind victory. After PRD scored five runs in the third inning, courtesy of back-to-back two-run singles from Jake Kwiatkowski and Antonio Ciccone IV, Traction Canes trailed 6-3. They responded with a Tucker Richardson RBI single in the fifth and another from Cohen Creppel in the sixth to cut PRD’s lead to 6-5. Finally, after Wyatt Reesby scored on a passed ball to tie the game, Bowen Fontenot delivered the knockout blow with his sharp liner to center (and third hit of the game) to score Creppel. Ryuu Gaston closed out the game with 3.1 scoreless innings on the bump, and Traction Canes National escaped with the win.
