West Virginia (12) vs State College (3): BOX SCORE - The Black Bears clinched their third straight during Tyler Kaltreider’s Pitcher of the Week defense and three three-hit performances. The right-hander from Lynchburg followed up striking out eight over seven-scoreless innings last week with eight strikeouts in six innings where he allowed one unearned run. At the time, it moved him into first place across the second half with 33 strikeouts. In the lineup, Cayden Gaskin, Zack Thompson and Cole Kitchens each had three hits. Thompson’s night would include his fifth home run of the summer (440 feet, 104.3-mph exit velocity) and Kitchens would feature two doubles and four RBI. For the Spikes, Jacoby Long and Nyan Hayes had two hits with two of the three RBI split between Blake Bradford and Ryan Rivera.
Aberdeen (8) vs Williamsport (7): BOX SCORE - The IronBirds’ fourth straight win extended their lead in the standings to a game and a half behind the offensive performances of defending Hitter of the Week, Max Galvin and Isaiah Parido. Down 2-0 in the second, Galvin put across Aberdeen’s first run of the game with his sixth home run of the summer (348 feet, 103.5-mph exit velocity). Another Williamsport run from a Matthew Williams double in the third, set up the IronBirds again for Galvin to come through. A sacrifice fly made it a one-run game with a runner on third and then the left-handed outfielder tied it up with a triple, then scoring to make it 4-3 on a Dylan Winebrenner single. The Crosscutters answered back to tie in the top of the fourth but it wouldn’t last long as half an inning later, Parido drove in the go-ahead and game-winning runs on a grand slam (357 feet, 99.8-mph exit velocity) for his third home run of the summer.
Trenton (3) @ Mahoning Valley (1): BOX SCORE - A pitcher’s duel in Niles, Ohio limited runs to only come from round-trippers to open the week. Jackson Thomas put together a strong performance on the mound with seven innings and five strikeouts on four hits, a run and a walk. The one run came from Zion Williams who went deep for the fifth time this summer, going to the opposite field (360 feet, 97.8-mph exit velocity). The Thunder would follow with Brayden Fraasman delivering a two-run home run in the fourth inning (372 feet, 104.1-mph exit velocity) for his first of the summer. Trenton would tack on its third run on a little league home run from Daniel Murillo who tripled and scored on a throwing error in the top of the eighth.
Wednesday
State College (6) vs West Virginia (3): BOX SCORE - The Spikes stormed out to a 6-0 lead with a six-run top of the first and that’s all the run support the pitching staff would need to even up the series. The big swing in the first inning came on Justin Journette’s three-run homer, a mammoth shot that travelled 434 feet at 107.9 mph. Elijah Cook responded with a solo home run in the third, another deep blast that carried 431 feet at 105.4 mph. The Black Bears would plate two more on RBI singles but three runs would be as close as they came. Caleb Ruter got the start for the Spikes and struck out seven over four innings, allowing a pair of runs on four hits and two walks. Josh Gentile followed Ruter and earned his first MLB Draft League win as he allowed just one run over 2 2/3 innings. Patrick Morris closed things down in the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning while striking out two, earning his second half leading fifth save. Malik Abdul carried the bulk of the work for West Virginia’s pitching staff, working five scoreless frames on two hits, two walks and struck out six. On a night where all Spikes starters had a hit except for one, Nyan Hayes led the way with three hits out of the leadoff spot.
Aberdeen (14) vs Williamsport (7): BOX SCORE - The two teams combined for 25 hits on Wednesday night but Aberdeen hit twice as many extra-base hits to help score twice as many runs. The big story in this one was a pair of Aberdeen grand slams, starting with Jacoby Radcliffe’s that blew the game wide open. Leading 5-2 in the sixth, Radcliffe cleared the bases with a home run to the pull side and extended the lead to 9-2. The hometown fans weren’t satisfied with one so the following inning CJ Dean came off the bench with the bases loaded and blasted the team’s second grand slam, growing the lead to 14-5. Aberdeen starter Evan Phillips tied the second half lead with his third win of the summer, allowing two runs across six innings while striking out three. Ethan Paulson nabbed his first MLB Draft League save as he tossed the final 2 1/3 innings. The top of the Cutters order carried the offense as leadoff man AJ Soloman had two hits and three runs scored, Nick Romano had three hits and drove in three, James McCoy drove in a pair on one hit and Matthew Williams drove in a pair on one hit.
Mahoning Valley (9) vs Trenton (3): BOX SCORE - Jayden Hylton’s leadoff home run was a sign of things to come as the Scrappers totaled 14 hits to even up the series. With the game tied 1-1 in the third, Juju Stevens nearly put one in Lake Erie with a 453 foot solo blast, giving Trenton the lead on the second furthest home run of the second half. Two-run singles in the third from Julian Hernandez and Tervell Johnson helped the Scrappers regain the lead and Jason Torres broke the game wide open in the fourth with a three-run shot, extending the lead to 8-2. Jeremiah Newman was stellar over his six innings, striking out five and allowing just two runs. Hernandez paced the Scrappers with three hits while Torres, Maddox Mihalakis, Cayden Evans and Davis Mauzy each contributed with two. For the Thunder, Michael Whooley had a pair of hits, including a double, and two runs scored while Cy Turner matched him with two hits and a RBI.
Thursday
West Virginia (10) vs State College (8): BOX SCORE - West Virginia capped off a six run comeback on a walk-off grand slam from Zack Thompson, his second grand slam of the month! State College jumped out to a 6-0 lead, led 7-2 heading into bottom eight and led 8-5 heading into bottom nine but a five-run ninth inning capped off the comeback. Spikes starter Trey Cehajic put together one of his best starts of the summer, surrendering two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out seven over 5.2 innings. The Spikes early six-run lead was spearheaded by Justin Journette’s 110-mph two-run blast in the fifth. Journette finished the night with two hits, a walk, three RBI and two runs scored. Leading the charge in the Black Bears comeback was Thompson’s three hits and five RBI, Ben Barrett’s triple and three RBI, as well as Blake Wilson who had two hits and three runs scored in his debut. Jacoby Long was another Spikes standout with three hits, a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Ryan Ure pitched a pair of scoreless frames for West Virginia before Rene Lastres punched out three in the eighth and Dawson Hall struck out two in the ninth. The walk-off victory secured their second straight series win and have now won four of their last five.
Williamsport (12) vs Aberdeen (8): BOX SCORE - The Crosscutters salvaged the final game of the series with 12 runs on 16 hits, scoring early and often with runs in each of the first four innings. While the Williamsport offense was putting up runs, starting pitcher Josh Willitts was keeping them off with seven dominant innings, allowing just one run while striking out seven. Willitts earned his third win, tying him for the most in the second half and lowered his ERA to 1.34, second among starters. Nick Barone led the way for Williamsport with four hits, a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Chris Stanfield trailed behind with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored while Nick Romano, James McCoy and Jack Kail each chipped in with two hits. Luis De La Cruz had the biggest swing of the night for Aberdeen, a second inning solo shot for his first MLB Draft League home run. Max Galvin cleared the bases in the ninth with a double, bringing the score to 12-8 but it was too late for an IronBirds comeback. Roman Harrison was a bright spot out of Aberdeen’s bullpen, allowing just one walk over two innings while striking out two.
Trenton (10) vs Mahoning Valley (6): BOX SCORE - A night after his 453 foot blast, Juju Stevens wasted no time, leading off the game with a 430-foot rocket to left center field. Trenton would add four more in the second, highlighted by Brayden Fraasman’s two-run ground rule double to take a 5-0 lead. Jason Torres pushed across two for the Scrappers in the third, but that’s as close as they would come. Trenton extended the lead to 10-2 on a two-run single from William Lybrook and RBI double from Cy Turner. The Scrappers put up a fight in the ninth, pushing across four runs but ultimately fell 10-6 in the rubber match. Jacob Smoot earned the win, working out of some jams over 2 2/3 scoreless innings and Justin Gay was sharp over his two scoreless innings. Maddox Mihalakis, Mike Young, Cayden Evans and Kaikea Harrison each had a pair of hits for the Scrappers and Evans also added three walks. Justin Abercrombie and Reagan Rivera were bringing fuel out of Mahoning Valley’s bullpen, each striking out two over their one inning in the eighth and ninth.
Friday
Williamsport (5) vs Mahoning Valley (3): BOX SCORE - Runs against relievers were hard to come by and four runs against Mahoning Valley’s was good enough to get the Cutters a win in the opener. The two bullpens combined to allow one run over 7 2/3 innings, led by Williamsport’s Matthew Mariano who picked up the save on 3 2/3 shutout innings as the Crosscutters only needed two pitchers on the night. Starter David Case worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs while striking out six. David Wells carried the load offensively for Williamsport with two hits, a triple and drove in three. Lynden Bruegman and Nick Anello each allowed just one walk and struck out two over 1.1 innings to give the Scrappers a chance at a late comeback. Cooper Vance had Mahoning Valley’s lone extra-base hit in a sixth-inning RBI double and Maddox Mihalakis drove in the other run.
West Virginia (6) vs Aberdeen (2): BOX SCORE - Six runs in the second and third innings were all Reilly Shafer and Andrew Luczak needed as they combined to allow two runs over nine innings for the Black Bears. The lone extra-base hit in the game belonged to Luis De La Cruz who went deep in the fourth inning, his second consecutive night with a home run. Ethan Paulson was Aberdeen’s bright spot on the mound, striking out two as he faced the minimum over 1 1/3 innings.
State College (12) vs Trenton (6): BOX SCORE - The Spikes came out the gates hot with four runs in the first and second, and another two in the third. Helping create the early lead was two RBI singles from Ryan Rivera and one each from Justin Journette and Jacoby Long. Trenton put up a fight in the late innings, cutting the deficit in half on a Bryson Trammell RBI double, Cy Turner sacrifice fly and Dean O’Neill RBI single.
