Tuesday

State College (12) vs Mahoning Valley (5): BOX SCORE - Fifteen hits from the Spikes helped open the series with a win. CJ Richmond found himself a double shy of the cycle with four RBI and runs, slugging his seventh home run of the summer (362 feet, 102.5-mph exit velocity) in the fourth inning. Flanking him in the lineup was Trent Turner (RBI, two runs) and Camden Ross (three RBI, two runs) who each had two hits with the latter recording a triple as well. Overall, State College had three triples with the third coming from Blake Bradford, who in his second Draft League game, put together a four-hit night.

West Virginia (6) @ Williamsport (0): BOX SCORE - Tyler Kaltreider was in full control for the Black Bears as they completed the road shutout. The right-hander set a new personal season-best after his last start, also at Williamsport, with eight strikeouts through seven innings. Kaltreider allowed just two baserunners with one hit and a walk that came in the second and third inning respectively. After him Andrew Luczak and Dawson Hall capped off the shutout with two innings, striking out three batters and only one hit between the two. On offense, Cole Kitchens dropped his fourth home run of the summer (359 feet, 94.7-mph exit velocity) to extend West Virginia’s lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning. Also in the Black Bears’ lineup, Zack Thompson and Owen Petrich recorded three hits, and Kevin Jones, Ben Barrett, Ian Collier and Kitchens had two. Thompson’s night marked his third straight game to open August with three hits in one game.

Trenton (3) vs Aberdeen (0): BOX SCORE - The second combined shutout across the league to open the week pushed the Thunder to above .500. Billy Morris went six innings deep and struck out three, even recording a hit himself with Justin Gay, Joey Colucci and Owen Stewart each putting in an inning to follow in the combined effort. AJ Swader led the offense in the game with two hits and two RBI. Dean O’Neill drove in Trenton’s third run with a double in the sixth.

Wednesday

Aberdeen (10) @ Trenton (8): BOX SCORE - A near three-hour lightning delay didn’t throw off the IronBirds as they were able to take the second game of the matinee. While not recording a hit, Max Galvin had a share of the game-lead of three runs scored, walking three times and stealing four bases. Aberdeen’s biggest run-producers were Jacoby Radcliffe (two hits, triple), Brylan West (double), CJ Dean and Taj Bates who each drove in two runs. For the Thunder, AJ Swader, Bryson Trammell and Dean O’Neill all had three-hit performances and Cassan Taggart led the game with three RBI. Aberdeen’s Nick Greaney and Trenton’s Blake Donnan both struck out three batters to lead the game with the former going two innings to set up Jake Geis’ third save of the season.

State College (4) vs Mahoning Valley (3): BOX SCORE - The Scrappers’ two-run lead was short lived as the Spikes answered right away to take the second game of the series and move to 10-1 at home in the second half. Pablo Torres started State College strong with three-scoreless innings with three strikeouts, two hits and no walks. In the midst of Torres on the mound, the Spikes took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Justin Journette single. In relief, Zach Kilby also worked three innings with four strikeouts on one hit and two walks. However, the Scrappers would tie the game with him on the mound following a throwing error after a strikeout trying to stop a double steal. In the seventh, Zion Williams would triple to right-center to give Mahoning Valley a 2-1 lead and would score two batters later on a Kaikea Harrison single. The Spikes would answer with a Nyan Hayes single, a league-leading 15th hit by pitch for Camden Ross with the bases loaded to tie and a sacrifice fly from Journette for the go-ahead score. In the top of the eighth, JJ Reyes would keep the Scrappers’ offense quiet with one baserunner reaching, followed by Patrick Morris’ fourth save as he got all three outs via strikeout.

Williamsport (9) vs West Virginia (7): BOX SCORE - Rallying themselves while suppressing the answer led to the Crosscutters avoiding going under .500 behind the offensive production of James McCoy. The Williamsport designated hitter tallied three hits, including two doubles with a game-leading four RBI. One of those doubles highlighted the five-run, go-ahead seventh inning where McCoy tied the game with a two-run swing, scoring the go-ahead run on a Nick Romano two-run single, capped off by a Jake Zitella RBI-single. For West Virginia, Cole Kitchens had a three-hit night with three RBI to follow up a two-for-four game with an RBI the night before.

Thursday

State College (5) vs Mahoning Valley (3): BOX SCORE - The Spikes completed the sweep to increase their lead in the second half. Caleb Ruter earned his first win of the summer with five innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts. Following the southpaw from Colorado Mesa, Josh Gentile put together two perfect innings, striking out three batters. In the fourth inning down 1-0, State College would load the bases and tie the game on a Nyan Hayes single. Following him, Trent Turner would bring in the go-ahead run with a single of his own and then followed by a wild pitch the next batter on a CJ Richmond walk. In the eighth, Mahoning Valley would look to mount a comeback with an RBI-double from Mike Young and single from Julian Hernandez. Following the single to make it 5-3, JJ Reyes would enter with two outs for State College and strike out the first batter he faced to end the inning and kill the rally. He would then pitch the ninth for a four-out save, adding a second strikeout to his line.

Williamsport (6) vs West Virginia (6) (WIL wins in sudden death extra inning) BOX SCORE - After being shutout Tuesday, the Crosscutters took the series on a walk-off single from James McCoy in the sudden death extra inning. Through the first six innings, it seemed as if the Black Bears would repeat the series opener, holding Williamsport scoreless. With the start, Drew Townson worked five innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout and followed by a scoreless sixth from Tom Chmielewski who also struck out one. On offense during that stretch, West Virginia put five runs on the board with singles from Jackson Trout, Cayden Gaskin and Zack Thompson with a sacrifice fly from Kevin Jones. Another run would score in the seventh for the Black Bears, setting up the Crosscutters’ answer. The first run would come on a McCoy single, promptly followed by Matthew Williams’ fifth home run (412 feet, 105.5-mph exit velocity). Williamsport would put the next two runners on base for Trey Wells to step up and tie the game with his first MLB Draft League home run (377 feet, 99.2-mph exit velocity). A scoreless final two innings would set up the sudden death extra inning with West Virginia in the field and Williamsport at the plate. The Crosscutters would load the bases with one out for McCoy to bloop the first pitch of the at bat, falling safely just out of the reach of the left fielder for pinch runner Carson Bayne to score the walk-off winner.

Trenton (8) vs Aberdeen (6): BOX SCORE - On the brink of opening the homestand with a series loss, the Thunder rallied in the eighth to go back above .500 in the second half. Trenton put across three in the first inning on a two-run single by William Lybrook and single from Michael Whooley. The IronBirds answered by scoring two runs in the third on one sacrifice fly, with Patrick McCullough scoring from second base. They would take the lead in the sixth on RBI doubles from Isaiah Parido and Brylan West. The back-and-forth affair would then feature Whooley driving in a run to tie on a single in the seventh, but Aberdeen would score two for a 6-4 lead. The final blow from Trenton to come out on top would come from a game-tying, two-run single by Brayden Fraasman with a sacrifice bunt from Lybrook leading to the go-ahead run, capped off by Whooley driving in a run on a ground out. On the mound, Aberdeen’s Michael Laudando made his Draft League debut and led the game with four strikeouts across three scoreless innings of relief. Trenton’s Owen Stewart and Joey Colucci (2 Ks) combined for the win and save with 1 2/3 perfect innings of high-leverage relief.

Friday

Aberdeen (17) vs State College (2): BOX SCORE - It was all IronBirds to open the series in State College as they racked up 17 runs on 20 hits and ten extra-base hits. Isaiah Parido was the big winner on the night, going 4-for-5 with a home run, bases-clearing triple, sacrifice fly, six RBI and two runs. Luis De La Cruz chipped in with four hits of his own, including a double, two runs scored and an RBI. This was his second straight night with three or more hits. Patrick McCullough trailed behind with three hits, a double, two RBI and a run scored. Jacoby Radcliffe, Max Galvin and Dylan Winebrenner each had two hits, including a double for Radcliffe, Winebrenner and two for Galvin. Evan Phillips secured the win in his 5 2/3 inning start, allowing just two runs before Ethan Paulson and Roman Harrison kept the Spikes off the board for the final 3 1/3 innings. CJ Richmond and Jett Buck helped drive in the Spikes two runs and Richmond was the top producer with a single, RBI and run scored.

Williamsport (10) vs Mahoning Valley (6): BOX SCORE - Another six inning scoreless start from Josh Willitts allowed the offense to jump out to a big lead over the first six frames, pulling out a big win to pull themselves within 1.5 games of the Spikes. The right-hander allowed just five hits and two walks, earning his second victory of the season. Leading 1-0 in the Trey Wells came to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared them with a double, his first of three hits and two doubles. Wells finished up the night with three hits, three RBI and three runs scored. A Jake Zitella triple and Sam DeCarlo sacrifice fly extended the lead to 7-0, which was all the Cutters needed Friday night. The Scrappers fought back with six runs on four hits over the final three innings, but a three-run eighth inning from the Crosscutters would put the game on ice. Alongside Wells, Chris Stanfield also had three hits for Williamsport while James McCoy and Matthew Williams each had a pair. On the home side, Maddox Mihalakis drove in a pair with a walk and a single. Cooper Vance and Kaikea Harrison led the hit column for the Scrappers, each posting two.

Saturday

West Virginia (15) vs Trenton (9): BOX SCORE - Hits were aplenty in the series opener following a rainout on Friday night as the two teams combined for 31 hits and 18 runs through the first three innings. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, JuJu Stevens squared things up with his second home run (105.5-mph/415 feet) of the summer. West Virginia blew the game open in the top of the second with a seven-run inning on six hits, capped off by a Zack Thompson grand slam, his fourth home run of the year. Trenton got as close as two runs but Kevin Jones' first MLB Draft League quickly extended the deficit. West Virginia’s Thompson, Ben Barrett, Cayden Gaskin and Ian Collier led the way with three hits apiece, including a triple and double for Barrett who was also the starting pitcher. Trenton’s offensive output was led by three hits for the leadoff man Stevens and AJ Swader with both collecting a pair of RBI and runs scored. Bryson Trammell and Casen Taggart also chipped in with two hits each while Daniel Murillo was on base four times with a double and three walks. Andrew Luczak was the winning pitcher for West Virginia, allowing just one run over 3 1/3 frames. Trenton reliever Jacob Smoot was the most dominant arm in the game, retiring all nine batters he faced and punched out five.

Aberdeen (11) vs State College (1): BOX SCORE - The IronBirds offense was churning again on Saturday night, putting up double digit runs for the second consecutive night and the pitching staff was equally impressive. Both starting pitchers were dealing through three innings as Aberdeen’s Billy Barlow and State College’s Jackson Mayo combined to allow just one hit in that time. Barlow got the better of the two in the end, working four innings and he allowed just one unearned run on two hits, one walk and struck out four. The IronBirds opened the scoring in the fourth, putting up five runs on four RBI knocks from Dylan Winebrenner (double), Patrick McCullough, Randy Flores and Brycen Hammonds (two-run double). The Spikes lone run came in the next half inning on an RBI single from Camden Ross, one of his two hits in the game. Another big sixth inning for Aberdeen put the game out of reach as Max Galvin blasted his fourth home run of the summer and Hammonds drove in another two with his second double. Galvin, Hammonds and Flores led the game with three hits each and Spikes’ center fielder Jacoby Long also had a pair of hits. The IronBirds bullpen was superb over the final five innings with Ryder Edwards picking up the win on three scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk, before Michael Laudando wrapped things up with a pair of zero’s on just one hit while striking out four.

Mahoning Valley (7) vs Williamsport (2): BOX SCORE - It was a tale of two halves as the two teams both put up their runs early against the two starting pitchers before the two bullpens posted nothing but zero’s after the fourth inning. The Scrappers got on the board in the second but the third inning was the most impactful, posting four runs on a Maddox Mihalakis RBI single, Cooper Vance sacrifice fly and Julian Hernandez two-run single. The Crosscutters immediately answered with a pair of sacrifice flies from Jack Kail and Jake Zitella in the next half inning. But the Scrappers quickly erased those two runs with an RBI triple from Mihalakis and an RBI single from Vance. David Johnson’s 2 2/3 hitless innings out of the bullpen earned him the win and Reagan Rivera’s 1-2-3 ninth inning with two strikeouts closed out the game. Mihalakis and leadoff man Jayden Hylton led the game with two hits each. Williamsport’s bullpen dominance came at the hands of Matthew Mariano, who went 2 2/3 scoreless with two strikeouts and two hitless innings from Preston Drebes.

Sunday

Williamsport (8) vs Mahoning Valley (1): BOX SCORE - In a big series rubber match, Bobby Helt was masterful in his first start of the summer for the Crosscutters. The right-hander went four scoreless innings and allowed just two hits while striking out eight. Mahoning Valley’s starter, Alex Kanipe, also impressed as he allowed just two runs and none earned in his five innings of work. James McCoy quickly got the Crosscutters on the board in the first inning with a 107.2-mph triple and they would add another on an RBI groundout. The Scrappers offense got on the board in sixth and cut the deficit to one on a 106.3-mph triple from Jayden Hylton and Maddox Mihalakis immediately drove him in with a 106.2-mph double. Leading 3-1 in the eighth, Matthew Williams and Trey Wells provided more than enough insurance with a three-run shot from Williams and two-run shot from Wells. Williams' home run was his sixth of the second half, tying him for the league lead! Following in suit of the two starting pitchers, David Case was dominant in relief, allowing just one run on two hits over four innings, earning himself his second victory of the summer.

West Virginia (4) vs Trenton (2): BOX SCORE - The Black Bears completed the two-game sweep on the back of another quality start from Hunter Holzemer and several timely base hits. Holzemer picked up his third win of the summer as he allowed just one run over six frames on three hits, no walks and hit four batters. Trenton’s starter, Billy Morris, was superb as well, pitching the complete nine innings, the first pitcher this summer to do so. Morris surrendered four runs, three earned, on seven hits, one walk and struck out six. Ben Barrett got the Black Bears on the board in the first with an RBI single, his first of two hits. Alec DeMartino extended the lead in the fourth with an RBI single, helping make it 3-0 West Virginia in the inning. The final Black Bears run came on Ian Collier’s fourth home run of the summer, his second knock of the game, as well. Bryson Trammell got the Thunder on the board in the sixth with an RBI double, one of his three in the game. Trenton got within two in the final frame on a Brayden Fraasman sacrifice fly but it would be too late for a hometown comeback. Dawson Hall struck out four over the final two frames while allowing one run on one hit, earning his third save of the summer for West Virginia.

Aberdeen (15) vs State College (2): BOX SCORE - Aberdeen’s offense flexed their muscle for the third consecutive night, securing the sweep with another double digit night of runs and are now first place in the second half. Already leading 1-0 in the second, the IronBirds put up a six spot, starting with a Taj Bates RBI double, Isaiah Parido RBI single and Luis De La Cruz two-run single. Already leading 9-0 in the fourth, Max Galvin went deep with a two-run shot, his fifth of the summer, putting him one behind the second half lead. Jacoby Radcliffe, Isaiah Parido, De La Cruz and Bates all led the IronBirds with two hits apiece while Parido was on base five times with an additional three walks. Josh Milleville put together a strong five inning start for Aberdeen, surrendering just one run on three hits, three walks and struck out six en route to his first MLB Draft League win. Jackson Rains was the Spikes top producer on the night with two of their five hits. With the win and sweep, Aberdeen has jumped ahead of the Spikes in the second half standings, taking over first place by a half game.
