NEW YORK -- The MLB Draft League announced that Williamsport's Carter Dorighi and Rodney Shultz were named Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the period of June 17-23.
Dorighi, 21, garnered Hitter of the Week honors after batting .455 (10-for-22) with six runs scored, two doubles, one triple and three stolen bases in five games for the Crosscutters. He led all MLB Draft League hitters during the period in hits (tied) and total bases (14), finished second in runs scored and slugging (.636) was third in OPS (1.114).
Dorighi hit safely in all five games for Williamsport, beginning the week with a season-best four-hit performance at State College on June 18. After a 1-for-4 showing in Williamsport’s series finale against the Spikes, Dorighi went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and another stolen base against Mahoning Valley on June 20. He closed out the week with back-to-back 1-for-4 performances against the Scrappers.
A Cherry Hills Village, Colo., native, Dorighi owns a Draft League-best 14-game hitting streak. He’s recorded at least one hit in each game he’s played for the Crosscutters this summer, highlighted by seven multi-hit games. The shortstop also leads all qualified Draft League hitters in average (.417) and hits (tied-25), and ranks second in total bases (29). Overall, Dorighi has produced a .478 OBP and .483 SLG this summer while also going 9-for-11 in stolen base attempts.
Dorighi was a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection as a Butler junior this year after he hit .370/.435/.547 with seven home runs, 16 doubles and 55 runs scored in 55 games. Starting all 55 games at shortstop for the Bulldogs, he set a new Butler single-season hits record (90) and paced the BIG EAST in hits, runs and total bases (133).
Shultz, 21, earned Pitcher of the Week honors after he struck out a season-high seven batters over 5 1/3 scoreless innings in a no-decision against Mahoning Valley on June 22. The right-hander allowed one hit and two walks in the outing, inducing five ground-ball outs while throwing 46 of 81 pitches for strikes. He received Division II National Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing a no-hitter against Mercyhurst on April 20, one of two complete games Shultz threw during the season. His 82 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings led the Mount Cats’ staff and was the sixth-best mark among PSAC hurlers.
