Draft League POTW July 1-7

NEW YORK -- The MLB Draft League announced that Trenton’s Chris Reeder and Mahoning Valley's Jaden Agassi were named Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the period of July 1-7.

Reeder, 24, garnered Hitter of the Week honors after batting .643 (9-for-14) with a double, four runs scored and two RBI in five games for the Thunder. He led all MLB Draft League hitters during the period in average and OBP (.737), was second in OPS (1.451) and hits (tied), and finished fourth in slugging (.714).

Reeder recorded three multi-hit games while hitting safely in all five contests for Trenton. He collected a season-high three hits at Frederick on Tuesday, scoring a run in a 3-for-4 performance. Reeder was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI the following day, then went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI on July 4. After picking up a hit as a pinch-hitter on July 5, Reeder closed the week by reaching base four times, finishing 2-for-3 with two walks.

An Allentown, N.J., native, Reeder improved his Draft League average from .174 to .351 during his award-winning week, while his nine hits were more than twice his total from his first eight games with the Thunder. He’s hit safely in six straight games dating back to June 27, tallying 10 hits and four RBI in that span. Reeder batted .309 (56-for-181) with a .418 OBP, 42 RBI and 43 runs scored in 48 games this past spring as a The College of New Jersey graduate student. He received a Rawlings Gold Glove and was named to the all-Region 4 All-Defensive Team. He produced a .284 average (99-for-451) with 37 extra-base hits and 92 RBI in 123 games across five seasons with the Lions.

Agassi, 22, earned Pitcher of the Week honors after he struck out eight batters over 7 1/3 innings, both season-high totals, in Mahoning Valley’s win over West Virginia on July 2. The right-hander allowed one unearned run on one hit in the outing, walking three batters and hitting another while throwing 59 of 99 pitches for strikes in the longest start by a Draft League pitcher this season.

A Las Vegas, Nev., native, Agassi (1-0) has pitched to a 2.82 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in five starts for the Scrappers. He’s recorded 23 strikeouts against 12 walks in 22 1/3 innings while limiting the opposition to a .213 average. Agassi has given up two earned runs or fewer on four occasions this season and has racked up at least five strikeouts in three starts. He spent the 2021-23 seasons pitching at the University of Southern California, where he was 5-4 with a 6.20 ERA in 117 2/3 innings over 40 appearances, making 19 starts.
