Game Recap - August 12

Jay Newman delivered the goods on the mound for the Scrappers and the bats were alive early as Mahoning Valley took down the Trenton Thunder 9-3 on Wednesday night.

Jaden Hylton got the offense going immediately with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first. His second blast of the year made it 1-0, which would hold until the third.

The Thunder got a pair in the top of the third on a Pierre Cabral sacrifice fly and Juju Stevens two out home run, giving the Thunder a 2-1 lead.

That wouldn’t hold long. Julian Hernandez and Tervell Johnson both delivered two out two run singles in the bottom half of the third, putting the Scrappers back up 5-2.

They would get three more in the fourth when Jason Torres whacked his first home run of the year into the left field bullpen, driving in three more runs, making it 8-2.

Jay Newman got the start for the Scrappers, his fifth of the season and the third straight game he has appeared in as the starting pitcher. He would go six innings, allowing just the two runs on five hits, two walks, while striking out five.

He would exit after letting the first two runners on in the second, but Lynden Bruegman would pick him up, pitching a scoreless seventh and stranding the inherited runners on base.

Mahoning Valley got one more in the seventh, when Hylton scored from second base on a Cayden Evans sacrifice fly to the warning track in right-center field.

Reagan Rivera would pitch the ninth, allowing just one run and putting the cap on a 9-3 win, the 10th for the Scrappers in the second half of the season.

Mahoning Valley will go for the series win over Trenton tomorrow (August 13), 7:05 p.m. scheduled first pitch at 7 17 Credit Union Field at Eastwood.
