Williamsport, Pa. – Brendan Sweeney earned his first win of the season as the Crosscutters defeated the Scrappers 6-3 on Tuesday night.
Before Sweeney took to the hill, David Horn Jr. gave the Crosscutters another strong start. The Middle Tennessee State product retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced, shutting out the Scrappers over four innings.
Williamsport’s offense backed Horn’s efforts, plating three runs in the first inning. Kyle Schupmann and Addison Smith drew back-to-back walks to open the bottom of the 1st. Nick Barone was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Ben Tryon drew a walk to plate Schupmann and open the scoring.
Owen Prince plated Smith with a RBI fielder’s choice to make it 2-0. Barone capped the scoring, crossing on a throwing error by Scrappers second basemen, Jarren Purify, to give the Cutters a 3-0 lead.
Brodey Acres added on to the Williamsport lead in the bottom of the 4th inning, doubling home Prince, to advance the Cutters advantage to 4-0. It was Acres second double of the season and his sixth RBI.
Kurt Barr was the first out of the Cutters bullpen, working one inning of relief. Barr surrendered a lead off walk, followed by a two-run home run by Tommy Harrison, cutting the Cutters lead in half. It was Harrison’s first home run of the season.
Brendan Sweeney took over in the 6th inning and was lights out. The right-hander shutout the Scrappers over three innings, striking out two. Sweeney did not allow a hit or an walk, as he earned his first win of the season.
Williamsport added a little insurance in the bottom of the 8th inning as Slaide Burd ripped his second double of the season to right field, plating Acres to give the Cutters a 5-2 lead.
Burd scored on a RBI fielder’s choice that was batted into by Addison Smith to cap the Cutters scoring and give them a 6-2 lead heading into the 9th.
Dallis Moran entered in the 9th, allowing one run on two hits, before closing out the victory.
Williamsport looks to continue their winning ways, as they face the Scrappers tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
