WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Crosscutters offense could not support the superb outing from starter, Brad Rudis, falling in Sudden Death to West Virginia on Thursday night at Journey Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
Brad Rudis had never thrown more than three innings in a MLB Draft League outing until tonight, twirling six shutout frames. The right-hander out of Texas A&M struck out five batters and scattered three hits in the no decision.
Jackson Mayo got the scoring started for Williamsport, connecting on an opposite-field home run in the bottom of the first. The 358-foot solo shot was the first round tripper of the season for Mayo.
Williamsport added two more in the bottom of the 3rd inning as Marcus Brodil plated Vantrel Reed with a RBI Fielder’s Choice to give the Cutters a 2-0 lead and Brodil his first RBI of the year.
Max Mandler scored Mayo with a two-out, infield single, to give the Cutters a 3-0 advantage. For Mandler, it was his 6th RBI of the season.
Isaac Fix entered for the Crosscutters in the top of the 7th inning, walking the first two batters of the frame. Jace Rinehart grounded to shortstop Carlos Castillo, looking to turn a double play, however 2nd baseman Vantrel Reed dropped the throw at 2nd. The error allowed West Virginia to score their first run of the night, cutting it to a 3-1 deficit.
David Coppedge followed with a game-tying, two-run double to left-center, knotting the game at 3-3.
Fix settled in and turned in back-to-back scoreless frames. The lefty finished the night with five strikeouts over three innings.
The Crosscutters offense missed numerous chances throughout the game, stranding nine runners while going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
Judah Morris delivered the “walk-off” single in Sudden Death, giving West Virginia their fifth-straight win over Williamsport.
Per MLB Draft League rules, stats from Sudden Death do not count and there is no winning or losing pitcher recorded.
Williamsport looks to stave off the series sweep Friday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
