
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Crosscutters offense was held in check by West Virginia starting pitcher Jason Bollman in their 8-1 loss on Wednesday night at Journey Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
Bollman, who entered with an 0-1 record and a 24.30 ERA, tossed a complete game masterpiece to earn his first win of the season.
The right-hander held the Crosscutters to one unearned run on four hits and no walks. Bollman struck out nine batters and completed the outing having thrown 99 pitches (65 strikes).
The lone Crosscutters run came on a throwing error by Bollman in the 2nd inning, allowing Michael Zarrillo to score. At the time, making it a 2-1 deficit.
Reilly Shafer suffered the loss, falling to 0-3 on the season. The Clarion product allowed three runs (all earned) on five hits over a season-high 5.1 innings. Shafer allowed five walks and struck out three in the start.
Holland Townes entered for Shafer in the 6th inning and was able to strand a pair of inherited runners, keeping the West Virginia advantage to 3-1.
West Virginia struck for three runs against Townes in the top of the 7th inning, including a two-run home run by Alex Unger.
West Virginia picked up two more runs in the top of the 9th inning against Cutters reliever, Jed Boyle, taking a 8-1 lead into the bottom of the 9th.
The Crosscutters look to bounce back in the middle game of this three-game set with West Virginia on Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
