Cutters Split Series After Day Game Loss

Road Game - Trenton (1)

TRENTON, N.J. - Day time was the wrong time once again for the Williamsport Crosscutters as they fell to the Trenton Thunder 6-3 on Tuesday morning at Trenton Thunder Ballpark in the final game of this two-game series.

After Trenton opening the scoring in the first inning, it would take Williamsport until the fifth to respond. Max Mandler and Michael Zarrillo would each single to start the frame and both moved up into scoring position on a TJ Racherbaumer sacrifice bunt. Carlos Castillo would be hit by a pitch to load up the bases and Vantrel Reed recorded an RBI groundout to tie the game up at 1-1. Williamsport would leave the two runners on base with the game remaining tied after four and a half innings of play.

The Cutters offense went dormant from that point, only reaching base safely twice between the sixth and the eighth innings.

Williamsport attempted a ninth inning rally, now trailing Trenton 6-1. Marcus Brodil singled to lead off the ninth and Max Mandler worked a one-out walk two batters later. Michael Zarrillo singled to load the bases and TJ Racherbaumer picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly that scored Brodil. A wild pitch from Trenton closer Andrew Ronne would move Mandler and Zarrillo into scoring position for Carlos Castillo to single, scoring Mandler and moving Zarrillo to third. Unfortunately for the Cutters, Vantrel Reed would strike out to end the ballgame with Williamsport falling 6-3 after getting the tying run to the plate.

Tyler Valdez got the start for the Crosscutters but was forced to leave the game due to injury in the top of the fourth inning. Valdez allowed one run on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts in his 3.1 innings of work before the injury.

Josh Leerssen entered in relief of the injured Valdez and suffered the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season, after 2.2 innings and allowing two runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Sam Swygert finished out the game for Williamsport on the hill, going the final two innings while allowing three runs on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Williamsport returns home to Journey Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field to open a three-game series against the West Virginia Black Bears on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. It's another Wing Wednesday at the ballpark and Knoebels Kids Night.
