
The final full week of June presented performances of starting pitching dominance, games filled with home runs and some that came down to the Draft League’s sudden death extra inning. The league announced its upcoming exhibition game Monday, June 30, the seventh alumni made their Major League debut and more in the past week of the MLB Draft League.

Tuesday
Williamsport (8) vs State College (2): BOX SCORE - The Crosscutters became the first team to 10 wins this season in a game that was highlighted by a five-run first and 14 strikeouts across four pitchers. After scoring the first run on a throwing error, Taeg Gollert connected on a middle/middle sinker for his first home run of the season to add two more runs. Gollert would bring in a third run in the fourth on a walk. Pitching for Williamsport, Ryan Ure started with four shutout innings where he allowed four hits with five strikeouts. Two innings after his removal, Merit Jones would come in and pitch two innings where every out recorded was a strikeout. In four of his 10 2/3 innings, Jones would earn all three outs by strikeout. Amman Dewberry also produced at the plate for the Crosscutters with two RBI on two hits, the first a 101.5-mph single and the other a double to right. While the Spikes struck out 14 times, they also struck out 13 batters themselves. Ethan Storm especially, who struck out four batters in the seventh inning after one reached base after a dropped third strike.
Trenton (8) vs Mahoning Valley (5): BOX SCORE - The Thunder extended their win streak to four games with a home win to return to .500 in the standings. Fresh off of being named the Draft League’s Hitter of the Week, Jakob Poturnak hit his first home run of the season for the go-ahead two runs with a 400-foot, 104.6-mph blast to center field. His next at bat would result in his third RBI of the game with a single in the third. Bryson Dudley in his start for Trenton only allowed one run through three innings with five strikeouts and two hits. Poturnak’s homer wasn’t the only of the night as the Scrapper’s Max Johnson put on on the board with an inside-the-park home run to left field for his only hit of the night. Pitching by Mahoning Valley featured two innings with four strikeouts by Carter Wilcox as he only allowed one hit and walked two. The seventh inning had Trenton hitting the ball hard to drive in runs as Rowan Masse’s RBI single came 103.8 mph off the bat and Carsten Sabathia III’s two-run single had an even 102-mph exit velocity.
Frederick (12) vs West Virginia (8): BOX SCORE - Sam Parker made his presence known as the Frederick first baseman went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and three RBI. After recording the fifth and seventh hardest hit balls in the MLB Draft Combine, the Chipola JC product recorded all three hits with an exit velocity over 105 mph. Along with Parker’s, four more home runs were launched by Frederick’s Truitt Madonna (B7, 381 ft, 103.5 mph EV) and Anthony Diaz (B8, 371 ft, 98 mph EV), along with the West Virginia duo of Judah Morris (T4, 344 ft, 99.3 mph EV) and Tyler Pettorini (T7, 393 ft, 103.4 mph EV). Pettorini’s night wasn’t just kept to his home run as he ended the day 3-for-4 with three runs and two stolen bases.
Wednesday
State College (11) @ Williamsport (2): BOX SCORE - With an hour delay, the game narrowly finished before the next day as it took four hours since first pitch for the Spikes to take care of business and snap their four game skid. Carmelo Musacchia put the first run across with a triple in the third that scored Javon Hernandez who doubled two at bats prior which led to four more runs coming across in the inning. En route to their 11 runs, each score was set up by walking 17 times with seven of nine innings having at least two. Coming in as a pinch-hitter for Musacchia, who ended his day 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs along with his RBI, Merik Carter did not record an official at bat as he walked in all four plate appearances. Caden Shapiro was another Spike who had a mix of hits and walks with a 2-for-3 day, an RBI, run and two walks. Bobby Olsen made his second start for the Spikes and went to strike out six batters in four innings with one earned run, finding himself in jams where runners were in scoring position each inning and working out of them effectively. For the Crosscutters, Boston Smith demonstrated his power as he lasered a single to right at 107.4 mph and followed it up by going to the opposite field for his second home run of the season (368 ft, 97.7 mph exit velocity).
Mahoning Valley (6) @ Trenton (4): BOX SCORE - The Scrappers ended the Thunder’s win streak with a five-run third inning from singles by Kendrey Maduro, Chase Heath and JC Vanek. Three of Trenton’s four runs would come from pitching miscues in two wild pitches and a pickoff error, however, JuJu Stevens would finally get a hold of a pitch that he could take deep for his first home run of the season (360 ft, 97.6 mph). Mitch Dye earned the win for Mahoning Valley with a 5.2 inning start with two strikeouts and two earned runs on five hits. In relief, Tommy Szcepanski’s seventh inning had all outs come via strikeout with Brady Fuller earning the two-inning save with two strikeouts.
West Virginia (7) @ Frederick (4): BOX SCORE - The Black Bears took the second game of the series with six unearned runs in the second inning that featured Connor Hicks driving in three runs on a 101.9-mph double to center on an outside curveball. Frederick’s Dawson Willis took the MLB Draft League lead in home runs as he crushed his third of the season to center field (392 ft, 106.1 mph exit velocity). After hitting one himself in Tuesday’s game, Judah Morris added two more extra base hits to his name with two doubles. The second, being his eighth of the season, would drive in the Black Bears’ seventh run of the game. In long-relief for the Keys, Cooper Robinson went five innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts and allowed four hits after Matthew Becker’s two-inning start had five strikeouts with the six unearned runs.
Thursday
Williamsport (6) vs State College (5): BOX SCORE - The Crosscutters took the mid-week series after a go-ahead seventh innings that plated three runs after being down 4-3. Carlos Castillo would tie the game by scoring on a balk, also having himself a 1-for-2 day with two runs, two walks and three stolen bases. Matthew Bardowell gave Williamsport the lead on two instances, a single in the first to make the score 2-1, then driving in the game-winning runs with a two-run single in the seventh. After walking 17 the night before, the Crosscutters’ pitching staff of Bailey Matela (4 IP, 6 K, 8 H, 4 ER), Ryan Faulks (W, 3 IP, 1 K, 0 H), Brad Rudis (HLD, 1 IP, 2 K, 2 H, 1 ER) and Jed Boyle (SV, 1 IP, 1 K, 0 H) only walked one batter that came in the third inning.
Trenton (7) vs Mahoning Valley (4) Seven innings - BOX SCORE - A mid-game rain delay resulted in the contest to be shortened into seven innings with the Scrappers nearing a comeback with three runs in the final frame. Evin Sullivan came through on both ends for the Thunder as he reached base in all four plate appearances (two hits, two walks) with two RBI. The Binghamton product also threw out two runners, including a strike ‘em out, throw ‘em out double play in the sixth. Brayden Fraasman also drove in two runs for Trenton with an RBI-single in the first and third. Aaron Whitley also continued to display his speed as he stole two bases for 18 on the season for the Draft League lead, passing Trey Lipsey of Frederick, still yet to be caught.
Frederick (9) vs West Virginia (2): BOX SCORE - Sam Parker continued his hot stretch with a 3-for-4 day with an RBI in the first, a triple in the third (99.5-mph exit velocity), and two runs. Frederick prevented the Black Bears from scoring their first run of the game in the second when a double by Spencer Barnett went to the left field corner as Nico Newhan attempted to score from first but was cut down on a relay from Shane Lewis, Dawson Willis and Taj Bates. Newhan would later get a second chance to plate a run for West Virginia in the sixth and would succeed as his base hit would tie the game at three. The Keys, however, would capitalize in the seventh scoring six runs on a sac fly, fielder’s choice, wild pitch, ground out, fielding error and a walk. Ryan Rissas earned the win after working two innings of relief with five strikeouts and one unearned run, with the eighth inning, his second and final of the night, facing the minimum batters and striking out all three.
Friday
Frederick (2*) vs Williamsport (2) Sudden Death Extra Inning: BOX SCORE - After losing the first sudden death extra-inning game of the season, the Keys were able to win the second at home in walk-off fashion. Pitching dominated throughout as Max Hansmann’s start for Frederick lasted five shutout innings with five strikeouts and one hit. For Williamsport, Cody Delvecchio made his Draft League debut after his start in the College World Series in UCLA’s elimination game against Arkansas. The new Crosscutter struck out nine batters in six innings, tied for a single-game high on the season, with the Keys only two hits and runs in regulation being allowed in his start. The two hits were directly related to the two runs from an RBI single by Trey Lipsey in the third and a solo home run from Grant Gallagher in the fourth (368 ft, 107-mph exit velocity). Jake Moss would then come in for the final three innings after Delcecchio with six strikeouts on no hits. In the sudden death extra inning with the game tied at two, the Keys decided to be the offensive team with Truitt Madonna driving a ball into the right center gap to bring in the winning run.
State College (9) @ Trenton (1): BOX SCORE - Davis Webb flirted with MLB Draft League history as he worked six no-hit innings for the Spikes before a leadoff single in the seventh on the first pitch of the inning. Overall, Webb put together 6.1 innings with eight strikeouts, two hits, two walks and one earned run. State College’s offense was also working as strong as the pitching with five steals between Ryan Rivera (three) and Javon Hernandez (two) with Landon Johnson going two-for-four with four runs, three RBIs and a home run (382 ft, 104.5-mph exit velocity).
Mahoning Valley (9) vs West Virginia (2): BOX SCORE - With six runs over the first two innings, the Scrappers were able to take care of business at home behind Austin Newton and Max Hartman. Newton tossed five shutout innings with three strikeouts as the South Florida product surrendered only one run in 16 total innings with the Draft League. Hartman would be responsible for three runs as he scored the first run of the game, doubled in another in the second and scored after the hit. With the Black Bears using three pitchers, the middle man, Sam Tookoian, dominated as the only pitcher to not allow a hit with three perfect innings and five strikeouts. Through four total innings across two appearances, the Tookoian has yet to allow a single base runner.
Saturday
State College (4) @ Trenton (1): BOX SCORE - State College took game two behind 12 strikeouts from their pitching staff with a 5.1 inning start by Luke House who struck out five and surrendered Trenton’s only run. Matt Evans’s 1-for-3 day featured two instances where he drove in a run without recording an at bat via walk in the second and a sac fly in the sixth to go along with a run and stolen base. Quinn Bentley also featured an interesting line as the game’s first run of the day with three walks and a stolen base. With the loss for Trenton, Chris Billingsley struck out seven in 4.1 innings, bringing his week total to eight.
Mahoning Valley (7*) vs West Virginia (7) Sudden Death Extra Inning: BOX SCORE - The Scrappers prevailed in the sudden death extra inning making all three games of its nature across the league being won by the offensive team. The Black Bears took an early lead with a five-run first inning that was highlighted by a grand slam from Connor Hicks for his third home run of the season (353 ft, 101.8 mph), tying for the league lead. In the second, Chase Heath would tie the game for Mahoning Valley with an RBI single and drive in the go-ahead run in the sixth after West Virginia’s Nico Newhan tied the game with a solo home run (377 ft, 94.3 mph exit velocity). In the seventh, Sam Miller would tie the game again at seven that would remain on to send the game into the sudden death extra inning. With the bases loaded in the half inning, Ty Powell would send a bouncing ball to the gap between first and second, beat out for the walk-off score to come one away from a sweep.
Sunday
Trenton (8) vs State College (1): BOX SCORE - The Thunder were able to avoid being swept at home through multi-strikeout efforts from their pitching staff and an ability to find gaps while capitalizing on errors. Joe Ariola’s second start for the Thunder only lasted three innings but did not allow a run on two hits with three strikeouts. For State College, Dayne Pengelly continued the weekend of impressive starting pitching for the Spikes with five innings and seven strikeouts. However, was credited with the loss after allowing three runs, two of them earned. Michael Whooley produced the first runs of the game in the bottom of the first with a single that drove in Aaron Whitley and JuJu Stevens. Rowan Masse also drove in two runs for Trenton with a single in the sixth to bring in Stevens and Brayden Fraasman, making it a 7-1 game.
Mahoning Valley (6) vs Williamsport (5): BOX SCORE - The Scrappers took the series off the back of Chase Heath’s first home run (387 ft, 100.8 mph) and held off a Black Bear comeback in the ninth. Tyler Cerny brought most of West Virginia’s offensive production as he drove in the first run of the game with a double in the first and a single in the ninth to make it a one-run game. After Cerny’s double, the Black Bears had the bases loaded and two outs. JJ Tylicki’s slider would get away from Heath but was able to find the ball to his right and flip to the plate and secure the out and close out the weekend on top.
Williamsport (8) @ Frederick (5): BOX SCORE - The Crosscutters avoided the sweep behind a breakout performance from Christian Reyes, who went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs, and throwing out two runners trying to steal. The first home run of the day came from Williamsport’s Matthew Bardowell (353 ft, 98.5 mph) in the second inning with his second of the year, first since Opening Day. Putting together an impressive week, Merit Jones was credited the win with two no-hit innings, striking out three. Combined over his two appearances during the week he was given the win in both games as he threw four innings of one-hit ball with nine strikeouts. For the Keys, Grant Gallagher hit his second home run of the season to left center (367 ft, 101.9-mph exit velocity), his first since homering in the series against Baseball Canada’s Junior National Team. The transition for Brandon Cain from outfielder to pitcher continued as he was Frederick’s last pitcher to appear in the ninth, striking out two and not allowing a baserunner.
