UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.  – Jared Kengott delivered a quality start on the mound in his last scheduled outing of the 2022 season for the State College Spikes, but the Trenton Thunder surged late to take a 9-0 decision on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Kengott (3-2) allowed three runs, two of them earned, on six hits and two walks over six innings on the hill. The Emporia (Kan.) State product has now struck out 54 batters over 77 total innings with the Spikes (20-18 2nd half) in 2021 and 2022. Kengott also reduced his earned run average for the 2022 season to 2.44.

The Spikes also welcomed fans and their four-legged friends to the ballpark at the last Bark in the Park of the season, presented by the Centre Daily Times. In honor of the occasion, all of the pups in attendance were invited onto the field after the game for Dogs and Kids Run the Bases presented by Mount Nittany Health.

Trenton (8-24 2nd half) broke open the game in the seventh with five runs in the frame. Ryan McCarthy and Mark Herron Jr. contributed three hits apiece for the Thunder, with Herron notching a pair of doubles plus a pair of RBI’s.

Christian Capuano (2-1) earned the win after allowing five hits over six scoreless innings and striking out 10 batters in the process. The strikeouts were a season high for any Trenton pitcher.

Saturday, the Spikes and Thunder meet at 6:35 p.m. for the penultimate game of the 2022 season at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Right-hander Beau Nichols (2-1), who has posted a 1.10 ERA in three home appearances, gets the ball for State College. Trenton will send right-hander Matthew Sox (0-1) to the hill.

Gates will open at 5:30 p.m., with early entrance for Spikes Season Ticket Holders and members of groups attending Saturday’s game, for a Michael Mauti Bobblehead Giveaway to the first 1,000 fans, presented by Penn State Health.
