It was a shootout on Monday night at 7 17 Credit Union Field at Eastwood, but in the end the Scrappers would secure a 10-9 win to earn the series victory over the Trenton Thunder.
Mahoning Valley got the scoring started early with four consecutive two out singles. The latter 2 of the four came from Julian Hernandez and Jason Torres to plate a run and make it 2-0 after the first.
The Thunder would get both runs back in the second on a single by Billy Morris, but Mahoning Valley would then reclaim the lead in the bottom of the inning.
A single by Jordan Taylor, a groundout by Cayden Evans, and a sacrifice fly by Cooper Vance each plated a run, putting up three in the inning and making it 5-2.
Bats would go quiet until the fifth when the Thunder got a run back, but Tervell Johnson would increase the lead in the bottom of the inning with his first home run of the season. It was a three-run blast to left field to put the Scrappers up 8-3.
The Thunder caused trouble in the sixth, though, drawing three walks as a team, collecting four hits, and plating five runs to tie the game at eight.
The Scrappers would get the lead right back with an RBI single by Cayden Evans to go up 9-8.
The teams would exchange runs in the seventh as well. A sacrifice squeeze bunt by Cy Turner for the Thunder tied the game at nine, but Kaikea Harrison delivered the Scrapers the lead for good with a two out single to right field in the eighth, making it 10-9 which would be the final.
Reagan Rivera got the win to move to 4-3, and Justin Abercrombie collected his second save of the year.
Mahoning Valley goes for the series sweep tomorrow night (Tuesday) over Trenton, 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
