Jay Newman etched his name into the MLB Draft League’s history books on Sunday afternoon, delivering the first complete game performance of the season, as the Scrappers got the 6-1 series opening win.
Newman got into a jam in the first, allowing three consecutive runners to reach after getting the first out. Pierre Cabral was the last of those runners to reach, singling in the only run of the game for the Thunder, and putting runners on first and second with one out.
Newman would get the next batter to ground into a double play, and from then on Newman was dominant.
He would only one walk, one hit, and two others to reach on an error and a hit by pitch the remainder of the game. He would finish with just three hits allowed, and only one in the final eight innings. He only allowed the one first inning run, two walks, and struck out six batters to deliver the performance of the season for not only the Scrappers, but the Draft League as a whole.
The Scrappers got on the board in the third thanks to a fielding error by the Thunder, one of four they would commit in the game.
It would be 1-1 in the fifth when Jason Torres drove in the go ahead run with a single to give Mahoning Valley a 2-1 lead. They would get another later in the inning on a throwing error to make it 3-1.
Another run would score in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Cayden Evans to make it 4-1.
Mahoning Valley would apply insurance in the eighth for good measure, as Cooper Vance doubled in a run to extend his home game hitting streak to 13 games. He would score on a wild pitch, making it 6-1 which would be the final.
The win for Newman makes his record 4-2 on the season. The Scrappers will go for the series win tomorrow night, 7:05 p.m. first pitch from 7 17 Credit Union Field at Eastwood.
