Niles, Ohio - Utilizing a two-run first inning and a big six-run eighth inning, the Williamsport Crosscutters defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 8-1 on Sunday afternoon at 7 17 Credit Union Field at Eastwood to take the road series two games to one.
Owen Prince from the lead-off position was the first man to reach thanks to a throwing error by Scrappers third baseman Tervell Johnson.
Prince would quickly score two batters later thanks to an RBI triple off the bat of James McCoy, his second triple of the season.
McCoy would score as well on the very next at-bat on an RBI groundout by Matthew Williams to give the Cutters an early 2-0 lead.
That score would remain until the bottom of the sixth inning as Mahoning Valley would plate one run to cut the Williamsport lead in half at 2-1.
The Cutters, looking for insurance runs, would find six of them in the eighth inning. With one away in the frame, Joey DeMucci, Owen Prince and Nicholas Romano would all single back-to-back-to-back. In that sequence, both DeMucci and Prince would each record a stolen base as well and DeMucci would score on Romano's single.
Two batters later, now with two outs, Matthew Williams would blast his sixth home run of the season to score both Prince and Romano.
Jack Kail would put runners back on with a ground ball single before Williamsport would use the long ball again, this time from Trey Wells, his second of the season. That homer would push the score to what would be the final of 8-1 in favor of the Crosscutters.
Bobby Helt dominated in his first start for the Cutters in 2026, allowing just two hits over four innings of work while striking out eight Scrappers in a no-decision.
Usual starter David Case made his first appearance out of the bullpen, going the next four innings allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts, picking up his second win of the season to improve to 2-2.
Brody Roe closed out the game on the hill in a non-save situation, facing the minimum thanks to a double play, allowing one hit and one strikeout.
Williamsport enjoys a league off-day on Monday before continuing their six-game, seven-day road trip to open a three-game series at the Aberdeen IronBirds on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at IBEW Local 24 Union Field at Ripken Stadium.
