Capers Hold On Late

Williamsport, P.A. – Propelled by their four-run 6th inning, the Potato Capers took game one of three against Mahoning Valley, 5-4 on Friday night.

Josh Lanham delivered anther solid start for Williamsport, but again, did not find himself in the win column. The right-hander worked five scoreless frames, striking out six in a no decision. Lanham allowed three hits, but did not surrender a walk.

The Capers took the first lead on the night in the 4th inning, using a Mark Shallenberger double to set up the game’s first run.

Ali LaPread grounded through the legs of Scrappers pitcher, Grant Umberger, and reached on a throwing error by 2nd baseman Zach Ketterman.

On the play, Mitch McCabe scored from 3rd to give the Capers the early advantage. It was LePread’s sixth RBI of the season.

Zachary Murray relieved Lanham in the 6th inning, but surrendered the lead, on a two-out, RBI single from Changyong Lee, tying the game at 1-1.

Williamsport wouldn’t wait long to respond, plating four runs in the bottom of the 6th.

Levi Perrell dropped a two-run double inside the right field foul line, scoring Shallenberger and Jacob Harper to give the Capers a 3-1 lead. It was Perrell’s 4th double and his 15th RBI on the year.

Porter Brown added to the lead with a sacrifice fly to center, chasing home Mikey Florides to make it a 4-1 Capers lead. For Brown, it was his 18th RBI of the season.

Jacob Corson capped the scoring with a RBI single to right, scoring Perrell, as the Capers jumped out to a 5-1 lead. For Corson, it upped his RBI total to 23.

The Scrappers made things interesting in the top of the 8th inning, plating three runs against Capers reliever Luke Baker.

Logan Berrier took over with one out in the 8th inning. The right-hander would get out of the 8th with the lead and then work around a 9th inning error to close out the win and earn his second save of the season.

Williamsport looks to take the middle game of this three-game series Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Cutters Carvings – It was the Capers first home win since August 8th, a 5-4 win over West Virginia… There was nine appearances between wins for Zachary Murray, with his last coming on July 9th… Levi Perrell, Porter Brown and Mark Shallenberger each recorded two hits in the win…
