Monday
Trenton (8) @ West Virginia (2): BOX SCORE - MT Morrissey anchored the Thunder’s road victory with an eight-inning, 122-pitch performance with five strikeouts and keeping the Black Bears to three hits. The Trenton starter kept West Virginia scoreless until the bottom of the eighth with two outs when defending Hitter of the Week Judah Morris drove in two runs on a single to right field. Leading the Thunder’s offense, Connor Maryniak recorded three hits with a triple, two RBI and two runs. Also with multi-RBI games for Trenton was CJ Willis and Cameron Yuran.
State College (4) vs Frederick (0): BOX SCORE - The Spikes kicked off their seven-game homestand with a combined shutout behind Alec Sparks’ second quality start in his four starts this summer. The Nicholls State product went six innings with five strikeouts on four hits. Relieved by two innings from Dylan Cheeley who struck out three and only allowed two to reach base with Jason Shockley closing the game by striking out the last three batters of the game after allowing a leadoff single.
Williamsport (7) @ Mahoning Valley (2): BOX SCORE - Williamsport’s Brad Rudis became the first pitcher this summer to reach double-digit strikeouts with 10 over five innings of work. Max Mandler contributed to four of the Crosscutters’ seven runs with two runs, including the first of the game and two RBI on his singles in the fourth and seventh. Michael Zarrillo would cement Williamsport’s victory with his second home run in as many games with a solo shot 354 feet to right with an exit velocity of 100.6 mph. For the Scrappers, Chase Nixon put together his first multi-double game of the summer, scoring their first run of the game after his two-bagger in the third.
Tuesday
West Virginia (10) vs Trenton (6): BOX SCORE - The Black Bears kept their lead in the second half standings behind a quality start from Jake Lynch. West Virginia got out to a 7-0 lead through the first four innings without scoring on a hit. The second inning scored runs on a hit by pitch, fielder’s choice, walk and sacrifice fly with three runs in the fourth on a fielding and throwing error. After two Trenton singles to make it a 7-2 ballgame, the Black Bears would get their first runs on hits from a three-run triple by Drew Collins and one-run single by Alex Ungar. In the ninth, the Thunder would spark a small rally that was highlighted by John Schroeder’s third RBI of the game with a two-run double for his third hit of the game.
State College (5) vs Frederick (1): BOX SCORE - The Spikes took game two of their homestand behind a career performance from Michael Quevedo. The Kansas State product would tie a collegiate career high in innings (7) while also the Draft League single-game high and personal best with 12 strikeouts. Offensively, the Spikes set a team-best on the season with seven combined stolen bases, led by two-steal games by Adonis Forte and Chenar Brown.
Williamsport (4) @ Mahoning Valley (2): BOX SCORE - The Crosscutters closed out the two-game set, one game within the first place West Virginia Black Bears. Leading off the game, Vantrel Reed put the Crosscutters ahead with his second home run of the summer (359 feet, 94.3-mph exit velocity). Keeping Williamsport ahead, A.J. Campbell surrendered only two runs (one earned) through his six-inning start with five strikeouts, as Tommy Rover provided the Scrappers’ runs with a two-run shot to right field (383 feet, 97-mph exit velocity). Leading off the top of the ninth, TJ Racherbaumer would extend the Crosscutters’ lead with his own solo homer to right center on a middle-up heater at 364 feet (95.7-mph exit velocity).
Wednesday
State College (2*) vs Mahoning Valley (2) Sudden Death Extra Inning: BOX SCORE - The Spikes extended their homestand win streak to three as they outlasted the Scrappers in the sudden death extra inning. Both teams were backed by reliable pitching with State College’s Andrew D’Alessio working a four-inning start with five strikeouts with three no-hit innings to follow by Ahmad Harajli (2 IP, 1 K) and Anthony Steele (1 IP, 3 K) and two innings by Jack Hagan (3 K). For the Scrappers, Robert Helt set a personal summer-best with eight strikeouts over five innings with a combined five strikeouts by relievers Logan Jones, Blake Barker and Grant Manning. With the game tied after nine, Jason Shockley was tasked to secure the sudden death extra inning victory for the Spikes and did so after loading the bases and striking the last batter out.
Williamsport (3) vs West Virginia (1): BOX SCORE - The Crosscutters won their fifth straight game behind a two-run fourth inning and allowing a combined four hits. Josh Leerssen’s start went five innings with one earned run on three hits and four strikeouts. Isaac Fix then fired two shutout innings followed by a two-inning save by Leo Giannoni. For the Black Bears, Solomon Washington’s first start since being named Pitcher of the Week resulted in five innings with seven strikeouts and the two earned runs that resulted in the Williamsport win. Following him, Joe Steeber went to strike out four in two innings, with two runners reaching via hit.
Frederick (7) @ Trenton (2): BOX SCORE - Frederick snapped their four game losing streak on the back of a dominant Jake Hunter start that saw him carry a no-hitter into the seventh inning. The East Carolina product turned in one of his best pitching performances through seven innings with 11 strikeouts, both personal bests across his career (including NCAA) and the second most strikeouts in a single game this season. On offense, the Keys were led by Ethan Ott with an RBI-single in the third and Isaiah Greene who cleared the bases with a double for three runs in the eighth.
Thursday
State College (7) vs. Mahoning Valley (6): BOX SCORE - After heading to a sudden death extra-inning in game one, the Spikes and Scrappers provided another thriller as both team’s exchanged blows in the final frame. Heading the ninth tied 4-4, the Scrappers picked up three straight singles from Patrick Roche, Chase Nixon (RBI) and Dreylin Holmes (RBI) to take a 6-4 leading to the bottom of the ninth. An attempted game ending double play from the Scrappers ended with an out and error, allowing two runs to score for the Spikes before Jaden Collura walked it off with an RBI single to right field. Nixon and Holmes led Mahoning Valley with three hits apiece, while Dan Tauken had a pair of doubles for State College. Both starters, Min-Seong Jeong (MV) and Carston Herman (SC) set the tone for the night, each allowing two or less earned runs.
West Virginia (6) @ Williamsport (4): BOX SCORE - Heading into the game tied for first place, the Black Bears broke the Crosscutters five-game win-streak while taking the top of the standings. Gavin Braunecker earned the win and held the Cutters to just two runs over five innings, allowing five hits, no walks and struck out four. Heading into the sixth inning trailing 2-1, doubles from Drew Collins and Alex Ungar would highlight a four run inning for West Virginia, taking a 5-2 lead. Three straight singles in the eighth would help the Crosscutters chip away with two runs before Wes Burton came on for the save in the ninth, securing a big 6-4 win for West Virginia. Jackson Mayo, Matt Flaherty and Max Mandler all had two hits for the Crosscutters, while Collins had a pair for the Black Bears.
Frederick (10) @ Trenton (3): BOX SCORE - The Keys took their second straight to secure the road series win behind seven runs that were responsible by Trey Lipsey and Jamal Ritter. Despite Lipsey having only one hit in the game, he drove in a run on a groundout in the eighth and scored three runs after his double, walk and hit by pitch to go with his two stolen bases. Ritter would also record his one hit via a double that drove in a run and would come across to score twice with two walks and a stolen base. Frederick’s Devan Bade would lead the game with two RBI on two hits as he gave the Keys the lead in the fourth with a groundout and then singled in another run in the seventh. Trenton’s offense would come on three swings, two being solo home runs by Jackson Van De Brake (352 feet, 93.2-mph exit velocity) in the first and Evin Sullivan (367 feet, 95.7-mph exit velocity) in the sixth. Donovan Cash would account for another Thunder run with a 103.6-mph single to center in the fourth.
Friday
West Virginia (11) @ Williamsport (6): BOX SCORE - In the premiere series so far in the second half, the first-place Black Bears and second-place Crosscutters split the first two games before West Virginia took the final game on the back of 15 hits and 11 runs. Trailing by two in the fifth, DeMarckus Smiley provided the big blow for the Black Bears, clearing the bases and scoring three runs with a double. Smiley would end up with a pair doubles, while Alex Ungar and Jake Berg both did the same. Jacob Weaver received the win for West Virginia with his longest outing of the summer, working 7.2 innings while allowing four earned runs. Max Mandler led the way offensively for the Cutters, totaling three hits, a double, two RBI and a run scored. Marcus Brodil and Carlos Castillo each chipped in with two hits and a double. With the series win, the West Virginia remains in first place and are now two games up on Williamsport.
Mahoning Valley (*3) @ State College (3) Sudden Death Extra Inning BOX SCORE - In arguably the most exciting series so far this summer, the Scrappers took the rubber match on the road, needing a sudden-death extra inning for the second time in three games. Mahoning Valley took an early 1-0 lead on a Max Johnson sacrifice fly, before the Spikes stormed back in the bottom half with three runs on a Trotter Boston double (two RBI) and T.J. Salvaggio (RBI). From there, strong outings from both bullpens kept the score tight as neither team allowed a run over four innings each. Dylan Cheeley, Jeff Heinrich and Jason Shockley combined four four scoreless innings out of the Spikes bullpen, while Matthew Rivera and Cole Cheatham did so for the Scrappers. Cheatham stayed on the mound, keeping the Scrappers off the board thanks to a massive play by third baseman Max Johnson, cutting down the winning run at home plate.
Frederick (6) @ Trenton (3): BOX SCORE - The Frederick Keys secured their first three-game sweep of the second half on the back of Brooks Ey’s first win in the MLB Draft League. The Keys jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first with all five runs scoring on 103+ mph doubles from Cam Hassert (RBI), Bronson Rivera (three RBI) and Ethan Ott (RBI). The five runs was all Ey would need as he worked five innings, surrendering six hits, two runs, no walks and struck out three. Travis Belz was strong in relief for the Thunder, coming on in the 2nd inning and working four innings of one run ball. Jared Beebe led Trenton in the hit department, picking up a pair and an RBI, while Andres Vega had a double, HBP and two runs scored. With the win, Frederick passed Trenton in the standings to take over fourth place.
Saturday
Frederick (*2) @ Williamsport (2) Sudden Death Extra Inning BOX SCORE - Pitching was the theme in the opener between Frederick and Williamsport with just four runs and 14 hits between the two. Brad Rudis got the ball for the Cutters and was effective over five innings, allowing just one run on two and two walks. Frederick needed just two arms in this one with Harold Baez going six innings allowing two runs on nine hits and no walks. While there was no pitching in this game, it would have went to Jace Miner as he allowed just one hit and one walk over the final three innings before making a massive pick off in the sudden death extra inning. Cam Pittman had a double for Frederick, while Ethan Ott and Taj Bates grabbed RBI’s. For Williamsport, Jackson Mayo led the way with three hits and Vantrel Reed and Rayth Petersen each had two.
West Virginia (11) @ Mahoning Valley (3): BOX SCORE - West Virginia won its third straight game on the backs of 12 hits, while only one went for extra-bases, and all but one Black Bear picking up at least one hit. While their offense was the story in this one, Jason Bollman went deep into this game, working eight innings and receiving the win, allowing two earned runs and striking out eight. The Black Bears broke it open with a five-run sixth inning and never looked back from there. Drew Collins came through with three hits and three RBI, Jordan Peyton had a pair of hits and Jake Berg and David Coppedge each collected two RBI. Chase Nixon was the Scrappers offensive leader, collecting three hits and a double. Patrick Roche also had two hits, a double, RBI and run scored.
Trenton (3) @ State College (1): BOX SCORE - The Thunder jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on the road and never relinquished it with a strong start from Luis Misla and four shutout innings from the bullpen. Misla allowing one run over five innings while striking out eight, before Dosie Drakeford and JJ Almeda shut down the Spikes over the final four frames. CJ Willis opened the scoring in the second and Jackson Tucker immediately scored with an RBI single. There wasn’t much scoring going forward before Chenar Brown put the Spikes on the board in the 5th with an RBI ground-rule double to score Conor Higgs after his double. Connor Maryniak had the lone multi-hit game for the Thunder while Conor Higgs and TJ Salvaggio each collected three for the Spikes.
Sunday
West Virginia (*7) @ Mahoning Valley (7) Sudden Death Extra Inning BOX SCORE - West Virginia closed out the week on a W4 as the Black Bears worked out of a sudden death extra inning jam on defense. West Virginia’s Alex Ungar produced early runs with an RBI-double in the first and third, both at above 100 mph in exit velocity. Dreylin Holmes and Carson Hornung played a key factor in forcing the extra frame with Holmes ending the day 2-for-4 with a two-run double to bring the Scrappers within one, then scoring on Hornung’s single to tie for his third RBI of the game. With the Black Bears on defense for the sudden death extra inning, Spencer Hill was called out of the bullpen and was able to close out the game and work out of a bases loaded jam by inducing a weak groundball back to the mound.
Frederick (*8) @ Williamsport (8) Sudden Death Extra Inning BOX SCORE - Frederick’s ninth inning rally to tie helped lead to their fifth consecutive win and second sudden death extra inning victory this week. The Keys started the game with a three-run homer to left by Ethan Ott (367 feet, 94.6-mph exit velocity) that was answered in the bottom half with four runs on two-run hits from Max Mandler and Rayth Petersen. The Crosscutters would extend their lead to 8-4 entering the ninth when Frederick would produce a rally to tie on a force out and three consecutive singles from Cam Hassert, Ott and Jamal Ritter. With the Keys batting in the sudden death extra inning, Frederick would walk-off with the win on a throwing error trying to back-pick the runner on third trickling into left field.
Trenton (9) @ State College (5) Sudden Death Extra Inning BOX SCORE - The Thunder took the road series behind a 13-hit effort and capitalized on three errors. Trenton’s Connor Maryniak put together his fifth multi-hit game of the week (seven games) and collected three RBI for the first time since the start of the second half. Jared Beebe also collected three RBI for the Thunder on a third-inning single, a sacrifice fly and a force out for his first three-RBI game of the summer. In the eighth and ninth, State College would attempt to rally with four total runs on two singles and a run-producing ground out.
