
Williamsport, Pa. - Trey Wells drove in three runs, pacing the Crosscutters to a 5-3 win over the Scrappers in the series opener on Friday night at Journey Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
Wells helped set the tone early, throwing out Davis Mauzy trying to steal 2nd base, helping David Case work a clean 1st inning.
Nick Barone opened the scoring for the Crosscutters, sending a two-out RBI double to the track in left-center, scoring Sam DeCarlo to make it 1-0. It was the seventh double and 25th RBI for Barone.
Jake Zitella followed with a RBI single, scoring Barone, to up the lead to 2-0. Zitella ups his RBI total to 10 for the year.
After the Scrappers scored a run in the top of the 3rd, Wells added to the Cutters lead with a two-run triple to right. Wells finished the three-base knock with a brilliant swing move slide, avoiding the tag at 3rd. It was the first triple for Wells, giving him 13 RBI and the Cutters a 4-1 lead.
Wells added his third RBI of the night in the 5th inning, reaching on a infield single with the bases loaded, making it 5-1 Williamsport.
The Scrappers got to David Case for two runs in the 6th inning, forcing the Cutters starter out after 5.1 innings of relief.
Matthew Mariano entered from the pen and allowed an inherited runner to score. Mariano would settle in and worked 3.2 scoreless innings of relief to close out the win.
Earning his third win, Case struck out six Scrappers batters and collected three perfect innings in the outing. Mariano earned his second save, striking out three.
