Williamsport, P.A. – Williamsport batters struck out a season-high 16 times in their 5-1 loss to Trenton.
Cutters starter Tyler Valdez made his home debut, but battled his command most of the short outing. Valdez walked four batters and hit another over an inning plus of work. He was forced to exit the game with an apparent injury.
Jacob James took over with an at bat in progress, delivering ball four to the current batter, loading the bases.
Trenton would plate two runs in the inning, both belonging to Valdez, to take a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning.
James would shut down Trenton over three innings, striking out a season-high seven batters. James did not allow a run of his own in the outing.
Mike Hansell took over in the 5th inning and bad luck struck quick as Pete Durocher popped up to right field, but the ball was lost in the twilight, leading to a leadoff triple.
Durocher scored a batter later on a sacrifice fly to center field, making it 3-0. Hansell would not allow another run in his two innings of relief, picking up a pair of strike outs.
Jacob Corson opened up the Cutters 6th inning with a double, his 10th, to right-center. McGwire Holbrook advanced Corson to 3rd with a single to put runners on the corners.
After a Kyson Donahue strikeout and a walk to Porter Brown, Cory Taylor grounded up the middle, resulting in a putout at 2nd base of Brown, but allowing Corson to score from 3rd. It was Taylor’s second RBI of the season, making it a 3-1 deficit.
Unfortunately for Williamsport, that would be the extent of their offense for the night.
Trenton added one more run in the top of the 7th inning against reliever Jacob Hasty. Hasty allowed the one run over an inning plus of work, striking out two.
Logan Berrier worked the last two innings, allowing an unearned run in the top of the 9th inning.
Williamsport wraps up their series with the Trenton Thunder tomorrow night. First pitch scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
