Cutters Walk Over Spikes to Open Series

Williamsport, Pa. – Taking advantage of a season-high 13 walks, the Cutters defeated the Spikes 12-3 to open the three-game set on Tuesday night.

Williamsport wasted no time opening up their offense, seeing their first four batters reach in the bottom of the 1st inning, as Kyle Schupmann doubled off the left field wall to lead things off.

Addison Smith followed with a double to left, scoring Schupmann to give Williamsport a 1-0 advantage and for Smith it was his 17th RBI of the season.

Ben Tryon followed a Brodey Acres single with a base hit of his own, scoring Smith to make it a 2-0 Crosscutters lead and giving Tryon his 15th RBI.

Chris Stanfield plate Acres with a sacrifice fly making it 3-0 and Nate McHugh ripped a RBI single to chase home Tryon to cap the scoring in the opening frame at 4-0.

The Cutters opened it up in the bottom of the 3rd, taking advantage of four walks and a hit by pitch, scoring five runs in total. Slaide Burd picked up a two-run single to up his RBI total to five, giving the Cutters a 6-0 lead.

Schupmann added to his line, singling home McHugh to make it 7-0, and giving the Illinois product 8th RBI of the season. Schupmann would later score on a wild pitch, making it a 9-0 lead on Schupmann’s 20th run scored.

With the bases loaded, Ben Tyron was hit by a pitch, plating Burd to up the Williamsport lead to 8-0. It was Tryon’s second RBI of the night and his 16th of the season.

Williamsport added another run in the 4th inning, without getting single hit. Working five walks in total, Addison Smith plated Owen Price, making it 10-2. It was Smith’s second RBI of the game and his 18th of the year.

Three more walks lead to two more Williamsport runs in the 5th inning. Burd drew a bases loaded walk to chase home Tyron, giving Burd a season-high three RBI on the night while making it 11-2.

Kyle Schupmann drove in Nick Barone with a single, making it 12-2 and giving Schupmann his second RBI of the game and his 9th for the year.

On the mound, Alex Walsh allowed two runs over four innings in his second start for the Cutters. The lefty out of Jacksonville University struck out two, walked one and allowed three hits in the no decision.

Will Bartkowski improved to 2-1, working three innings of relief. The side-arm right-hander allowed an unearned run on three hits while striking out three.

Myles Myer and Will Howell worked back-to-back perfect frames in the 8th and 9th respectfully. Myer picked up two punch outs while Howell struck out one to close out the win.

Williamsport looks to take the middle game of the series Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm against the State College Spikes.
