Trenton, N.J. - Williamsport was able to take a 3-0 lead over Trenton but couldn’t hold on as the Cutters fell to the Thunder 7-3 on Saturday night and are swept in the three-game series at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.
Williamsport was the first to find the scoreboard with runs coming in the third inning. James McCoy worked a one-out walk and would quickly score thanks to the sixth double of the season for Matthew Williams. Williams would advance to third on a wild pitch while a Nick Barone walk and a Nicholas Romano hit by pitch would load the bases for Jack Kail. Kail would drive a sacrifice fly to center to score Williams, giving Williamsport a 2-0 lead in the middle of the third inning.
The Cutters worked a little two-out magic in the fifth to extend their lead. Nick Barone would single and steal second, his 12th stolen base of the year. Following a Nicholas Romano walk, Jack Kail would pick up his second RBI of the contest as he singled to left field and plated Barone, pushing the Williamsport lead to 3-0 in the middle of the fifth.
Trenton’s offense would respond with four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, giving the Thunder their first lead of the night at 4-3 after five innings.
The Thunder would add three more insurance runs in the eighth inning while holding Williamsport off the scoreboard, bringing the game to it’s final score of 7-3 in favor of Trenton and completing the sweep of Williamsport.
Evan Grimes took the loss in his start, falling to 1-1 on the season, after allowing four Thunder runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Davin Pollard went the next 2 2/3 innings allowing no runs on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.
Caleb Anderson failed to record an out while allowing three runs on three hits with one walk and no strikeouts.
Luc Lavigueur closed out the game for Williamsport, retiring all three batters he faced in order with a one strikeout.
Williamsport now returns to Journey Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field to open a three-game series against the West Virginia Black Bears on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
