Cutters Complete Sweep of Thunder

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – For the second-straight game, a late triple gave the Crosscutters the lead for good. Armani Newton’s three-bagger helped the Cutters complete the three-game sweep of the Thunder on Sunday afternoon.

Williamsport starter Dylan Alonso worked four innings, allowing one run, on four hits and two walks. Alonso struck out four batters in the no decision.

Williamsport was able to tie the game in the bottom of the 5th inning, taking advantage of a pair of errors by the Trenton defense. Amman Dewberry, last night’s hero, reached base on an error and stole 2nd and 3rd. On his steal of 3rd, John Schroeder’s throw went into left, allowing Dewberry to score the tying run.

Another Thunder error gave the Cutters their first lead, as Juju Stevens throw from left sailed into the Trenton dugout, allowing Hayden Jatczak to score to make it 2-1.

Joey Spence singled in Logan Johnstone to make it 3-1 in the 6th. It was Spence’s first RBI of the season.

Trenton battled back, using a two-run double to deep center off the bat of Aaron Graeber, tying the game at 3-3.

Another Trenton error helped set up the go ahead score for Williamsport, as Dylan Schaefer took 2nd on an errant pick off attempt. Armani Newton smoked an offering into the left center gap, scoring Schaefer, to give the Cutters a 4-3 lead.

Boston Smith followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Newton to up the Williamsport advantage to 5-3. It was Smith’s fourth RBI of the season.

Easton Davies earned the win in relief, his first win of the season, but was forced to leave the game early. Davies was struck, by a 103 MPH line drive by Carsten Sabathia, in the right arm. Davies collected the ball and retired Sabathia on the play.

Jed Boyle entered and was able to strikeout the only batter he faced in the 8th inning. Boyle earned the save, retiring the side in the 9th.

Monday is a league-wide off day, as the Crosscutters open a three-game series against the Frederick Keys on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
