TRENTON, N.J. – Camden Ross smashed a homer and reached base three times to set the State College Spikes’ new franchise record for most consecutive games reaching base at 27 as the Spikes fell to the Trenton Thunder, 10-6, on Saturday night at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.
Ross surpassed Rowan Wick’s 26-game streak to round out his time with the Spikes (17-14 2nd Half) in 2014 with a first-inning walk, then stamped his record-setting effort with a solo shot down the right-field line in the fifth for his fourth homer of the season. Ross also added a single and scored two runs, increasing his on-base percentage across both halves of the season to .492.
The 27-game streak is also the longest in the MLB Draft League this season, with Vantrel Reed’s 35-game on-base streak for Williamsport last season currently holding the all-time league record.
Jett Buck gave the Spikes the lead in the opening inning with a solo homer to left for his first extra-base hit with the club before Trenton (15-15 2nd Half) used the crooked inning to take control of the game with four runs in the second, including Dean O’Neill’s two-run homer off the top of the right-center field wall, his second of the year.
The Thunder got further help from the long ball with Bryson Trammell’s two-run homer to right field in the third, his first of the season, and Brayden Fraasman’s two-run shot to left, his second of the year.
Spikes right fielder Jacoby Long recorded two doubles and drove in two runs to help the State College offense.
Trenton starting pitcher Billy Morris (4-2) went six innings for the win, allowing four runs, three of them earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out three batters. Morris also served as the Thunder’s designated hitter for the game, contributing three hits and an RBI to help his own cause.
Jackson Mayo (3-2) started and took the loss for the Spikes after being charged with six runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one batter over 2 1/3 innings.
Sunday, the Spikes finish their six-game road trip with the rubber match of their three-game series with the Thunder at Trenton Thunder Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. with right-hander Pablo Torres (0-1) starting on the mound for State College against Trenton right-hander Jackson Thomas (1-2).
