UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.Jack Riedel collected a pair of hits, including a double, but the remainder of the State College Spikes’ bats were stifled in a 6-0 defeat against the Frederick Keys on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Riedel, the Rice product who hit a pair of homers in the same game on Monday against Trenton, notched his two-base hit in the first inning, then added a leadoff single in the sixth.

Frederick (3-4) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Kendry Maduro doubled in a run, Irvin Escobar singled in another, and two-way player Jordan Hamberg tripled home the last in his role as right fielder. Escobar and Tervell Johnson each produced three-hit games.

Starter Ben Harris (1-1) took the loss for the Spikes (4-3), allowing three runs on five hits over two innings.

Frederick starter Corbin Foy went four scoreless frames in which he yielded one hit and two walks while striking out three batters. However, Foy missed out on the win as Major League Baseball Draft League rules use MLB rules that require a starter to go five innings to earn the victory. Keys reliever Drew Buhr (1-0) took the win as a result with a scoreless, one-hit fifth inning.

Saturday, the Spikes meet the Keys in the middle game of their three-game set at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The 6:35 p.m. contest will match State College right-hander Gabe Starks (0-0), a University of Texas-Arlington product, against Frederick right-hander Hunter Bell (0-0).
