Second Straight Sudden Death Victory Leads Cutters To Sweep

Road Game - Trenton (5)

Trenton, NJ – For the second night in a row, the Williamsport Crosscutters rally to force sudden death and defeat the Trenton Thunder, sweeping the two-game series at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.

The Cutters fell behind 6-0 early but started the comeback in the top of the seventh. After the first two hitters got out, Tyler Lasch singled up the middle. Will Fuenning then came to the plate and hit a home run to left field making it a 6-2 ballgame.

Williamsport’s offense exploded in the top of the eighth as Jose Gonzalez led off the inning with a no doubt home run to right field.

Mason Minzey then singled. EJ Taylor would give the Cutters even more momentum as he homered to center, making the game 6-5.

This is where the Thunder defense would stumble as Garett Wallace struck out but got to second thanks to a dropped third strike and throwing error. After a Brayland Skinner walk and pitch runner Isaiah Byars taking over for Wallace, the Thunder defense helped the Cutters again as Will Fuenning hit a grounder to third but an error allowed Byars to score, Skinner to reach third and Fuenning to reach first. Adam Becker capitalized on this with a single to score Skinner and Fuenning to reach second. Jose Gonzalez kept the rally going as he singled, driving home Fuenning and making the score 8-6.

After allowing two runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at eight and not scoring in the ninth, the Cutters looked for Connor Langrell to pitch the team to Sudden Death. He did just that as he threw a perfect ninth inning where he struck out two.

Langrell was tasked to get the final three outs in Sudden Death. He got a fly out, and fielder’s choice, and another fly out to close out Sudden Death and giving the Cutters the win.

Williamsport started Shaun Gamelin where he struggled giving up seven runs, where only six were earned, in his five and a third innings of work. Gamelin also gave up seven hits, five walks but did strike out four. James Reilly threw an inning and a third where he gave up zero runs, along with a hit and two walks. Kaleb Sophy faced three hitters where he hit one and walked two and was responsible for giving up a run. Mitchell Scott came in and threw an inning where he didn’t allow a run but did allow two hits and a walk.

With the win and the series sweep, Williamsport improves to 8-11 in the MLB Draft League 2nd Half Standings but remain in 5th place, 0.5 games behind the Frederick Keys.

The Crosscutters will enjoy a league-wide off day tomorrow before beginning a six-game homestand against the 1st Place West Virginia Black Bears and the 2nd Place Trenton Thunder. Details on tickets and upcoming promotions can be found at Crosscutters.com.
