
University Park, PA – The Williamsport Crosscutters suffered a 12-4 loss to the State College Spikes on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in the middle game of this three-game series.
Williamsport took the early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. McGwire Holbrook led-off with a single and Jacob Harper reached via a Spikes fielding error. Porter Brown drove in Holbrook with a single and Mikey Florides drove in Harper with an RBI groundout.
The Cutters would find the scoreboard again in the fifth, trailing 5-2. Mark Shallenberger hit a one out double and would move to third on a balk call. He would be driven in on a McGwire Holbrook RBI triple to make it 5-3.
Williamsport would only score one more run, coming in the eighth inning trailing 9-3. Jacob Harper would start things off with a single and move first to third on a Porter Brown double that was mere inches away from being a home run over the high wall in right field. Mikey Florides would then pick up his second RBI of the night on a Sac Fly that scored Harper.
State College would add three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, bringing the contest to a 12-4 final in favor of the Spikes.
Emmett Bice suffered his first loss of the season on the mound after a six inning start, allowing five runs, two earned, on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Nick McCollum, making his second relief appearance of the season, went one inning allowing four runs, all earned, on four hits and one walk.
Connor Thurman closed the night on the mound, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and striking out one in one inning of relief.
With tonight's loss, Williamsport falls to 3-6 in the Second Half and 25-14 overall.
This series now shifts back to Journey Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field for the rubber match. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
