Cutters Draw a Dozen Walks in Loss

HOME GAME WEB STORY (MAHONING VALLEY) (7)

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Williamsport Crosscutters drew twelve walks in their 10-4 loss to Mahoning Valley Saturday night.

Josh Leerssen took to the hill for the Crosscutters and got off to a great start, striking out two in a perfect first inning.

Vantrel Reed backed Leerssen in the bottom of the 1st inning, leading off the game with a single and advancing to second on an error. Reed proceeded to steal 3rd base and score on an errant throw, giving the Crosscutters a 1-0 lead. It would be the only time Williamsport held the lead.

The Scrappers got the run back in the top of the 2nd inning and then proceeded to plate seven runs in the top of the 3rd inning against Leerseen. The right-hander was removed after 2.2 innings of work, allowing seven runs on six hits.

Sam Swygert got out of the 3rd inning, allowing a single run of his own along the way. Swygert shutdown the Scrappers over the next two innings, retiring seven-straight batters.

Jed Boyle gave the Crosscutters three solid innings of relief, allowing two runs in his outing. Both runs came with two outs in his final inning of work.

Leo Giannoni worked a scoreless inning of relief in the top of the 9th inning as the Crosscutters bullpen allowed three runs in 6.1 innings of work.

Offensively, Vantrel Reed led the way for the Crosscutters, collecting his first four-hit game of the season. The Cutters 2nd baseman finished the night 4-for-6 with a double, two stolen bases and two runs scored.

Jackson Mayo went hitless but became the second Crosscutters batter this season to draw four walks in a single game, the previous being Marcus Brodil, who drew four walks against the Scrappers on July 30th.

The Crosscutters also struck out 10 times in the loss and stranded 16 base runners, leaving at least one runner in all nine innings.

Williamsport looks to salvage the two-game series Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. against the Scrappers.
