
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Williamsport’s offense was held to three hits in their 8-0 loss to the State College Spikes on Monday afternoon.
Leo Giannoni made his first professional start and got off to a rocky start. The submariner faced nine batters in the top of the 1st inning, surrendering three runs on two hits, two walks and a pair of hit batters.
Giannoni settled in, allowing just one more run before exiting in the 6th inning. In all, Giannoni allowed four runs on six hits. He struck out four batters over a season-high 5.1 innings, throwing 99 pitches.
Carlos Castillo was the lone bright spot for the Crosscutters, as the shortstop collected a pair of single, finishing the afternoon 2-for-3.
With his single in the 5th inning, Castillo registered his 61st hit of the season, the most by a Crosscutters batter in a single season in the MLB Draft League era.
State College put the game away late, getting a two-out Grand Slam from shortstop T.J. Salvaggio to up their lead to 8-0. The slam came off of Cutters reliever Holland Townes, with runners on he inherited from Isaac Fix.
D.J. Smiley registered the only other hit for the Crosscutters, a 2nd-inning single that followed Castillo’s first hit of the game. Castillo was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first on the play. It was the only time the Cutters got a base runner past 2nd base in the game.
Williamsport continues their final series with State College Tuesday night, first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
