Williamsport (6) vs Frederick (4) Completed after six: BOX SCORE - After being rained out Tuesday night, the Crosscutters came out with a victory after six complete innings when more rain came over Journey Bank Ballpark. Frederick got off to an early lead with a run in the first and second from singles by Dawson Willis and Eddie Hacopian with Ben Gregory making his Draft League debut, where he struck out two in just as many innings with only one hit allowed. The fifth had Williamsport tie the game on a wild pitch and force out that was followed in the sixth with a Frederick sac fly and throwing error to take a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Matthew Graveline moved one RBI behind the league leaders with a two-run single that gave him eight on the season, tying the game when another wild pitch and groundout gave the official final blows to end the game on top, 6-4.
State College (5) vs Mahoning Valley (1) Completed after five: BOX SCORE - Another rain-shortened game in the league had the Spikes take the lead just in time during the fifth and final inning. Dayne Pengelly and Terry Hayes Jr. put together impressive starts for their respective teams as Pengelly struck out four to Hayes’ three in three innings. The Scrappers got an early lead when Michal Sindelka doubled in the first to drive in Kendrey Maduro, however two-run singles from Harrison Didawick and Quinn Bentley would be the deciding factor for State College.
West Virginia (12) @ Trenton (8): BOX SCORE - After a short delay, the Black Bears wasted no time as they scored nine runs in the first inning, six before recording the first out. With 14 batters stepping up to the plate, Tyler Pettorini (3-for-5, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, 2 R) made the most of his trips in the inning with a triple to drive in the first run and then doubling to drive in the eighth in the opening frame. Equal to Pettorini in their quantity of extra base hits for West Virginia was Beau Sylvester with two doubles as his only hits of the night in five at-bats with three RBIs and runs. With seven total pitchers for the Black Bears appearing in the game, Aiden Moffett closed the door in dominant fashion for his first save of the season, striking out three in 1.1 innings. Trenton’s bats flashed life at the top of the order with two two-run homers from Aaron Graeber, an opposite field shot to left in a full count with two outs in the fifth and Michael Whooley in the seventh. Graeber’s first of the season was set up by Aaron Whitley’s double that tracked at a 106.8 mph exit velocity. In similar fashion to Moffett, Cooper McGrath was the last Thunder pitcher of the night, going 1.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Thursday
Frederick (5) @ Williamsport (0): BOX SCORE - Frederick pitching was too much for the Crosscutters as the Keys left Williamsport splitting the series in shutout fashion. In the first inning, a groundout by Lance Trippel drove in the first run that was followed up two pitches later by Dawson Willis’ second home run of the season. Making his third start, Matthew Becker tossed three shutout innings with only two hits, no walks, and four batters retired via strikeout for a total of 16 on the season, passing Sam Cozart of West Virginia by one. In relief, Max Hansmann flashed a sweeping slider that had as much as 23 inches of horizontal break on his way to strike out five batters in three innings for a hold. For the Crosscutters, Dylan Alonso came out of the bullpen to lead the game with six strikeouts through three shutout innings.
State College (5) vs Mahoning Valley (3): BOX SCORE - A rain delay interrupted impressive starts from State College’s Roman Kimball (3 IP, 4 K, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB) and the league debut of Mahoning Valley’s Zion Theophilus (2 IP, 4 K, 0 H, 0 R, BB) but once the tarp came off, the Spikes took the only lead of the game. Carmelo Musacchia was responsible for the first tallies of the game with a two-RBI double followed by scoring on a throwing error when stealing third base. Down 5-1 in the seventh, JC Vanek slugged the second furthest home run of the season to date with a 411 foot two-run blast into left center field. In for the save, Rodney Shultz made quick work to close it out as Vanek’s next at bat would be the game-ending double play.
Friday
Trenton (6) @ State College (2): BOX SCORE - The Thunder were finally able to snap their five game skid on the road with 12 combined strikeouts from six pitchers and a four-run second inning to give them their first lead since the fourth inning the previous Sunday. In his second game this season, Brayden Fraasman earned his first two hits with an RBI, run and stolen base. Jakob Poturnak also drove in a run for Trenton with a double in the fifth and even scored one of the first two runs of the game on a Danny Corona two-run single in the second. For the Spikes, Landon Johnson extended his hit streak to five games with an RBI single in the fourth. With the 1-for-4 night, the State College first baseman puts his average at .357 with an OPS of .919 after seeing his line as low as .091 and .222.
Williamsport (2) @ West Virginia (1): BOX SCORE - Sam Cozart’s first start since being named back-to-back Pitcher of the Week saw short dominance with six strikeouts in three shutout innings with three hits and a walk. The Black Bears took their 1-0 lead in the first inning with a Jonny McGill single and with the score being held until the eighth inning. Heads-up and aggressive base running plus singles from Boston Smith and Matthew Graveline put runners on second and third for Jack Lausch’s groundout to tie the game at one. In the first at bat in the top of the ninth, Matt Ilgenfritz worked a 1-2 count to full before slugging his first home run of the season for the game-winning run at 401 feet with an exit velocity of 101.8 mph. In the ninth for the Crosscutters, Brad Rudis worked two outs with a pop up and strikeout before Tyler Cerny reached third on a throwing error by Rudis on a soft comebacker. However, the error wouldn’t come back to bite as he would strike out the next batter on a sinker away for Williamsport’s first nine inning victory since Sunday, June 15 against Trenton.
Frederick (12) @ Mahoning Valley (6): BOX SCORE - Frederick’s bats came out hot in Mahoning Valley to open up the series with a 14 hit performance. Trailing 1-0 after the second, Frederick opened the third with three straight hits from Taj Bates (2B), Trey Lipsey and Eddie Hacopian. Along with a Dawson Willis RBI double, the Keys took the lead 4-1 in the third and never looked back. The big moment for Mahoning Valley came in the fifth when Ben Watson cleared the bases with a three-run double, cutting the Scrappers deficit to four. But the Frederick offense was too much on Friday night as Bates, Hacopian and Willis all collected three hits, while Lipsey had two, leading to a 12-6 victory. Tommy Szczepanski led the way out of the bullpen for the Scrappers, allowing just one walk over 2.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Saturday
Trenton (8) @ State College (4): BOX SCORE - It was all-hands-on-deck for the Thunder to take Game 2 of the weekend series with a total of 20 players (15 batters, five pitchers) taking the field. Carsten Sabathia III’s return to the lineup from the MLB Combine started with a sac fly from the first baseman in the top of the first, with State College answering back by Carmelo Musacchia’s RBI single, a wild pitch, and a sac fly to make the score 3-1. Down 4-1 in the fourth, singles from Jaden Sheffield and Aaron Whitley brought the Thunder within one. Pinch-hitting in the ninth, Evin Sullivan would tie the game up at four with Jakob Porturnak driving in the go-ahead runs with a three-RBI double, scoring later on Aaron Graeber’s double as the game’s final run.
Williamsport (1) @ West Virginia (0): BOX SCORE - A soft line drive to center by Taeg Gollert was the only score of the game with the Crosscutters taking both games at this point in the series by one run. Pitching was the main attraction as both teams only allowed two hits to each other in the fashion of one single and one double. In his Draft League debut, Connor Knox went five strong and earned the win for Williamsport as he struck out five. In West Virginia’s corner, Joe Ruzicka worked four innings, struck out seven, and walked none with his only blemishes on the game being the two hits he allowed in the first inning to score the sole run. After the first, West Virginia threw eight no-hit innings with 12 total strikeouts from Ruzicka, Will Rogers (2 IP, 2 K), Tanner Perry (1 IP, 1 K), Brayan Arendt (1 IP, 2 K) and Aiden Moffett (1 IP, 2 K).
Mahoning Valley (12) vs Frederick (0): BOX SCORE - The second game in the Scrappers/Keys series to have the winning team score 12 runs came from the hosts to avoid the potential sweep. Only allowing four hits between Auston Newton (4 IP, 4 K), Garrett Peters (W, 3 IP, 3 K), and Adam Falinski (2 IP, 1 K), the Scrappers took advantage early with a run in the first and made the game a blowout in the fifth when nine runs came across. Max Johnson started the inning with a two-RBI single, scoring the next run, and then driving in the 10th run of the game and ninth run of the inning with a single to right. The final blow of the game came from JC Vanek’s second home run of the week with a 379 foot blast to right center field.
Sunday
Frederick (7) @ Mahoning Valley (1): BOX SCORE - To take the weekend series on the road, the Keys looked to be in a position to win without recording a single hit as they held a 2-1 lead before Anthony Diaz singled to left field with two outs in the sixth, driving in a run. After Frederick’s first hit, Caden Merritt followed up right after with a two-run triple, ending the day 2-for-4 with three RBI, a double, a run and the aforementioned triple. Dax Dathe made his first start after having two relief appearances for the Keys and struck out four over four innings with the only run scored for the Scrappers being unearned on three hits and two walks. Jack Bowery took the role Dathe had previously held in long relief with three shutout innings and three strikeouts. With Kendrey Maduro reaching on an error, he would steal second and advance to third on another error that led to the unearned run scoring on Ty Powell’s single to right field. JJ Tylicki worked Mahoning Valley’s last inning on defense, striking out the side without allowing a runner.
West Virginia (6) vs Williamsport (2): BOX SCORE - The Black Bears avoided the sweep scoring more runs in the fourth than the Crosscutters scored all game. Sam Miller (1-for-4, RBI, R, BB), Judah Morris (1-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 BB, R, SB) and Ben Zeigler-Namoa (1-for-3, 2 RBI, SB) all drove in runs on singles in the third inning for a 4-0 West Virginia lead as Rob Evans Draft League lasted three shutout innings with three strikeouts, two walks, and one hit. Williamsport would get their runs on Matthew Bardowell’s first triple of the season driving in two, but would be one of Sam Tookoian’s victims in the ninth as the Black Bears’ reliever struck out all three batters to close, including an 11 pitch at bat for the last out of the game.
Trenton (8) @ State College (5): BOX SCORE - The Thunder were able to complete the road sweep and turnaround after a five-game losing streak with an impressive debut from Wake Forest’s Joe Ariola and the capitalization on three errors and three wild pitches by the Spikes. Two of the five runs for State College came from Carmelo Musacchia who also showed off his speed with three stolen bases. Aaron Whitley for Trenton also extended his stolen base streak to five games with his 12th of the season, complimented by an RBI and run. Despite the five runs allowed for State College, Trenton’s pitching staff was a bright spot as the eight pitchers combined to allow only one hit that came in the second inning from Musacchia before stealing second and third then scoring.
