
Frederick, MD– The Keys took Sunday’s rubber match in a 10-7 slugfest over State College on Sunday. A four run eighth inning was enough to catapult Frederick to victory.
The scoring started early with four straight Keys baserunners to start the game. Zaid Walker opened the scoring with an RBI single before Taylor Smith blasted a three-run shot to give the Keys an early 4-0 cushion after one.
After the Keys loaded the bases with one out in the second inning, a double play ball plated another run, putting them up 5-0.
The Spikes would eventually take the lead by rattling off six unanswered runs. In the third inning, Zac Vooletich put them on the board with a two run double, before a Brennen Dorighi RBI groundout made it 5-3.
Braeden Blackford led off the fourth with a solo home run to center field to cut the deficit to just one for State College. Vooletich singled in the tying run before a Carlos Contreras groundout gave them a 6-5 lead.
With two outs in the sixth inning, Spikes catcher Luis Aviles launched a mammoth solo home run off of the left field video board to add to the lead. The shot was measured at 432 feet.
Trailing 7-6 entering the eighth, the Keys put the first two runners of the inning on for Cameron Butler. Butler then launched a go-ahead three run blast to left field, putting the Keys up 9-7. Taylor Smith added insurance with an RBI single, making it 10-7 going into the ninth.
Kyle Salley locked down the save with the three outs coming on a pickoff, outfield assist from Zaid Walker, and looking strikeout.
