WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Evan Grimes held the Spikes in check as the Cutters picked up a 6-2 win over the State College Spikes on Saturday night at Journey Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
Grimes set the tone early for the Crosscutters, striking out a pair in a scoreless first inning. The lefty out of Russell Sage worked five-straight scoreless innings, including a perfect frame in the 3rd.
State College was able to get their two runs off of Grimes in the top of the 6th, utilizing a pair of two-out hit batters and a two-out, two-run single from Justin Journette.
Grimes earned his second win, finished the night allowing the two runs on five hits, but was able to strikeout seven Spikes batters, the most since striking out nine at Mahoning Valley on July 30th.
The Cutters offense took advantage of a pair of State College miscues in the bottom of the 1st inning, as Santino Panaro singled and then took 2nd on a failed pick off attempt. Panaro then stole 3rd and scored on an errant throw to give the Cutters a 1-0 lead.
Joey DeMucci opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd inning, doubling home Nick Barone to move the lead to 2-0. It was the first extra base hit of the season for DeMucci.
The 3rd run of the night crossed, as Spikes 3rd basemen had a throw get away from him, allowing Santino Panaro to cross and add to the Cutters lead.
Jack Kail came up clutch in the bottom of the 5th inning, chopping a two-out, RBI single through the right side, scoring James McCoy to make it 4-0 Williamsport. It was the 21st RBI of the year for Kail and the 51st run of the season for McCoy.
After the Spikes plated two in the topo of the 6th, Williamsport answered with two of their own in the bottom half, both coming with two outs in the frame.
Chris Stanfield singled home Sam Decarlo to make it 5-2 and then McCoy tripled home Stanfield to make it 6-2. For McCoy, it was his league-leading 52 RBI of the year and the 51st run scored by Stanfield.
Tyler Muscar took over on the hill in the top of the 7th inning and proceeded to deliver three shutout innings for the Crosscutters. Muscar worked around four hits, striking out three, to earn his 1st save of the season.
The series shifts back to State College Sunday night, First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm as the Cutters try to knot up the set.
