WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Cutters dropped their second-straight game against the Spikes, falling in Sudden Death on Friday night at Journey Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
David Case made his ninth start of the season and ran into early command issues which led to the Spikes plating a pair of 1st inning runs and a third run in the 2nd.
Case settled in, delivering three-straight scoreless frames from the 3rd through the 5th, registering perfect frames in the 3rd and 4th innings.
The lefty out of Memphis worked in to the 6th inning, but was removed after allowing his fourth run of the night. Case allowed four runs on eight hits and a pair of walks.
Matthew Mariano took over for Case and was able to work around a pair of inherited runners to keep the deficit at 4-0.
Williamsport’s offense found a away to break through on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th, using a RBI Fielder’s Choice from Trey Wells and a RBI ground out from Nicholas Romano to cut the Spikes lead to 4-2.
After a perfect frame from Mariano in the 7th, the Cutters utilized a bases loaded walk from Matthew Williams and a RBI Fielder’s Choice from Chris Stanfield to tie the game at 4-4.
Mariano was lights out, delivering anther perfect frame in the 8th inning and working around a walk in the 9th to keep the game tied heading to the bottom of the 9th inning.
In the bottom of the 9th, Chris Stanfield delivered a two-out single, but was promptly picked off as he attempted to steal 2nd base, ending the frame and regulation.
In the Sudden Death session, the Crosscutters surrendered a RBI single to Camden Ross to score Kyle Singer, giving the Spikes the walk-off road victory.
The Cutters look to bounce back Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm at Journey Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
Cutters Carvings: Per League rule, all stats from the Sudden Death session are unofficial and there are no pitchers of record… Williamsport finished the night 1-for-17 with runners in scoring position and are 1-24 with RISP in the first two games of the series… James McCoy collected a pair of hits, upping his total to 63 for the season… The Cutters drop to 3-2 in Sudden Death in 2026…
