Keys lose to Black Bears for third time this summer

Frederick, MD– The Frederick Keys (7-6) lost game one of their three game weekend series to the West Virginia Black Bears (3-10) by a final score of 8-5 at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.

Frederick Keys hitters struck out a season-high 16 times against West Virginia pitching. The Black Bears collected 14 hits and stole 13 bases in their third win over the Keys this summer in four games.

Despite getting the loss, right-hander Zach Fruit (Eastern Michigan) picked up seven strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work as the starter. Right-hander Connor Godwin (College of Central Florida) also pitched 2.0 shutout innings of relief out of the bullpen.

Shortstop Harold Coll (San Jacinto College) collected two hits and an RBI in his Frederick Keys debut. Catcher Carlos Guzman (Northwest Florida State College) and outfielder Logan Sanders (St. Petersburg College) also picked up RBI base hits in the loss.

Frederick will host West Virginia again tomorrow night, Saturday, June 18 for the second game of the series. It will be Star Wars Night at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium with special Star Wars themed jerseys to be auctioned off with proceeds being donated to Sophie and Madigan’s Playground. After the game, there will be postgame fireworks, presented by Lonza.
