Fitzgerald’s Home Run Lifts Frederick in Rain-Shortened Win

Frederick, MD– The Frederick Keys (1-1) defeated the West Virginia Black Bears (1-1) on Saturday night by a final score of 2-0 from Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium in five innings.

The only runs of the game came off the bat of Frederick third baseman Ben Fitzgerald (UC Irvine) in the 1st, who launched a two-run home run to straightaway center field over the batter’s eye for his first hit as a Key.

Starting right-hander Jordan Geber (Virginia Tech) pitched his best outing of the summer, going 5.0 shutout innings with four strikeouts and zero walks, earning the win.

The game was called in the bottom of the 5th with 0 out and an 0-2 count on Frederick first baseman Calvin Rucker after a one hour and 13-minute weather delay due to lightning and rain.

Frederick returns tomorrow, Sunday, July 24 for the rubber match against West Virginia. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
