Gupton’s Wheels Help Cutters Walk It Off

Williamsport, PA - Micheal Gupton raced home on Josue Urdaneta’s infield single, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 9th to give the Cutters a 5-4, walk-off win over the West Virginia Black Bears.

For the second-straight night the Crosscutters offense was able to put up a three spot early to take a lead against the Black Bears, this time it was in the bottom of the 2nd inning.

Cole Evans gave the Cutters an early lead with a two-run double deep into the right-center gap scoring Isaac Nunez and Sabin Ceballos to make it 2-0.

The Cutters right fielder then came around to score on a Lance Logsdon RBI single to right to cap the scoring. Evans finished the night 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

Williamsport’s offense went quite for a few innings and the Black Bears took advantage, scoring a run in the top of the 3rd inning and then plated three in the top of the 5th inning to take a 4-3 lead.

Ceballos started a two-rally in the bottom of the 6th with a double down the right field line and raced home on a error by West Virginia 3B Gehrig Anglin, tying the game at 4-4.

Sabin Ceballos became the 11th Crosscutters batter to collect three hits in a game, finishing the night 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. He elevated his batting average nearly 100 points.

Gupton lead off the 9th with a walk, stole 2nd and reached 3rd on a ground out to set up the winning run. Gupton did not record a hit in the game, but did play a major role in the outcome.

Riley Gowens did not factor into the decision, but was solid over three innings as a starter, allowing one run on three hits and two walks. Gowens struck out four and lowered his ERA to 4.00.

Mauricio Rodriguez earned his first win of the season, working a pair of scoreless innings in the 8th and 9th.

JJ Sanchez, Brandon Laux and Rodriguez were the final three pitchers out of the Cutters pen and they combined to throw 4.2 innings of scoreless relief to help the Cutters stay in the game.

The Crosscutters will look to take the series tomorrow night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
